SALT LAKE CITY - Eight swimmers of the University of Utah swimming teams are ranked among the top-50 collegiate times, according to a report released by Taper & Shave. Altogether, Utah is ranked in 23 of the 36 events.
Senior Cody Rempfer is ranked in four events: the 200 fly (1:48.16), the 100 fly (49.59), the 200 breast (2:03.62) and the 200 IM (1:50.92). Rempfer is ranked 10th in the 200 fly, 26th in the 200 IM, 41st in the 200 breast and is tied with Florida's Nick Borreca at 37th in the 100 fly. Rempfer's times are all top times in the MWC, except for the 200 breast, where he is ranked second to Scott Usher of Wyoming.
Junior Jonathan Larsen is ranked in the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Larsen is ranked 21st in the 100 free with a time of 44.94 and 31st in the 50 free with a time of 20.62. Larsen is ranked first in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events in the MWC.
Evan Castro is tied with the 22nd fastest time in the nation in the 100 breast with Thomas Clavier of Indiana with a time of 56.25. Castro is also ranked 48th in the 200 breast (2:04.00). Castro is ranked first in the MWC in the 100 breast, and fourth in the 200 breast.
The men's relay team of Rempfer, Larsen, Andrew Cole and David Maasberg is ranked 22nd in the 200 free relay (1:22.99); the team of Cole, Larsen, Maasberg and Matan Ratz is 37th in the 400 free relay (3:05.33). In the 800 free relay, the quartet of Ratz, Eric Jorgensen, Cole and Nick Philpot is ranked 35th (6:55.63), and in the 200 medley relay, the team of Cole, Castro, Rempfer and Larsen is ranked 29th (1:32.47). The team of Cole, Castro, Rempfer and Larsen is ranked 23rd in the 400 medley relay (3:21.42).
For the women, Utah has three provisional NCAA qualifiers: Alison McInturff, Amy Barefield and Marta Stepanczuk. McInturff holds the 36th fastest time in the 200 free at 1:49.89 and the 38th fastest time in the 100 free (51.04). McInturff is ranked first in the MWC in both events.
Barefield is 37th in the 50 free with a time of 23.50, which is the fastest time in the MWC for the season, while Marta Stepanczuk holds the 21st fastest time in the 1650 with a time of 16:44.95. Stepanczuk holds the fastest times in the MWC in both the 1650 free and the 500 free (4:54.02). Her time in the 500 free is an NCAA provisional qualifying time.
Sophomore Rachael Curci is ranked 49th in the 1650 free with a time of 17:02.72 to place her second in the MWC in the event. Freshman Michelle Blair is tied with Rebecca Sturdy of Texas A&M in the 100 fly with the 30th fastest time at 55.95. Blair is also ranked 38th in the 200 fly with a time of 2:02.42. Blair's performances in the 100 and 200 fly are the fastest times in the MWC for the season.
In the relay events, Utah's team of McInturff, Meghan Demchuk, Jamie Trapp and Amber Walker is ranked 43rd in the 200 free relay (1:36.53), while Barefield, McInturff, Trapp and Demchuk are ranked 37th in the 400 free relay (3:29.54). In the 800 free relay, the team of McInturff, Loren Sweny, Stepanczuk and Curci is ranked 27th in the 800 free relay (7:35.35).
The team of Leah Jensen, Adrian Kich, Blair and Barefield is ranked 22nd in the 200 medley relay (1:44.63) and in the 400 medley relay, Trapp, Kich, Blair and McInturff are ranked 35th (3:50.34).
"These rankings are a tribute to the hard work we have put in this fall," said Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "We are all proud and excited to have the University of Utah in a notable position among the nation's fastest times at this point. The challenge now lies with us seeing our goals through the rest of the season and come to fruition at the MWC Championships and on to the NCAAs."
