THIS WEEK: The University of Utah women's tennis team matches up against two conference opponents this week in Las Vegas. On Friday, March 26, the Utes battle UNLV at 2:00 p.m. and San Diego State University on Saturday, March 27 at 10:00 a.m.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK: Utah returns from their spring-break road trip after four tough losses. The first loss came when Utah was shut down 7-0 by No. 70 Nebraska on March 17. The Utes also fell to No. 65 Irvine 6-1 on March 18, No. 55 Long Beach State 5-2 on March 19 and UC Santa Barbara 4-3 on March 20.
UTE NOTES: Junior Allison Hansen and freshman Ashley Young are still unable to compete due to injury. Shannon Bullard, a junior from Ogden, and Jenacee Jackson, a freshman from Salt Lake, have joined the lineup to help the Utes out.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION: UNLV has an impressive 10-3 mark on the season and a No. 46 national ranking. The Rebels only losses have been to No. 1 Stanford, No. 4 Cal and No. 27 Tulane. The women's tennis team has enjoyed many wins, including a 4-1 victory over No. 63 Washington State. On March 23, the Rebels upset No. 42 Ohio State 5-2. Head Coach Kevin Cory leads the team and is in his 5th season with UNLV.
San Diego State is ranked No. 57 in the nation with a 4-7 mark on the season. The Aztecs are headed by coach Peter Mattera who is in his 11th season. Mattera led the women's tennis team to their first ever Mountain West Conference championship in 2003. Most of the Atztec's losses this season have been to nationally ranked teams.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Megan Dorny: "We are just coming off a pretty tough set of matches. As a team, we are really feeling the loss of Allison and Ashley due to injuries, and knowing what a big difference the health of those two players could make in the outcomes of these close matches is really weighing heavily on the team right now. The young ones on the team who are playing big positions are struggling with confidence, and we are trying to make the best of a poor situation. As coaches we are looking for the same great effort we have seen all year as we go into two conference matches against UNLV and SDSU this weekend. Each of the two teams are ranked, but not as highly as in past years. If we go out and give the same great effort that we have been, we may surprise even ourselves."
