The Utah baseball team (8-19) hosts Albertson College (21-21) for a noon doubleheader tomorrow, April 13, at Ute Field.
Utah Update
Utah went 1-2 in a three-game series against New Mexico last weekend. In the opener, the Utes were out-hit 16 to 7 and lost 15-4. Sophomore Jason Price suffered the loss on the mound, giving up 10 runs, only one of which was earned, on seven hits. He also walked four batters. Senior Eric Chevalier finished the day 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI, while freshman Jay Brossman went 2-for-4 with one run, while Trevor Eastman was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
In game two, Utah gave up three runs in the 11th inning, falling 7-4. Junior Clay Westmoreland suffered the loss on the mound. He threw 3.0 innings, giving up three runs on six hits, while striking out five. Utah's starter, Doug Mackay, pitched 7.0 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits. He struck out seven. Jake Waldram finished the day 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI, while junior Matt Ciaramella was 2-for-6 with one run and one RBI.
In the series finale, Utah easily defeated the Lobos 10-2. Senior Ben Buck collected the complete-game win on the mound, throwing all nine innings. He gave up two runs on six hits, while striking out two and walking one. Freshman Tyler Kay led the Utes at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one run and three RBI. Chevalier and Ciaramella were both 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Brossman was 2-for-5 with one run and two driven in.
Scouting the Opposition
Three Albertson pitchers combined to give up just two runs in 18 innings of work, and the defense committed just one error as Albertson swept Western Baptist 9-2 and 9-0 last Saturday. James Porter and Matt Bergstrom combined to strike out nine Western batters in the opener as Albertson completed its first series sweep of the 2004 season. Game two was dominated by senior Brad Burrow. The side-winding right-hander threw a three-hit shutout, striking out four without a walk. Greg Stalling went 5-for-10 with two doubles and three RBI in the twinbill, with Nate Freese going 4-for-7.

Buck Named MWC Pitcher of the Week for April 5-11
Ben Buck was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for April 5-11. Buck, a senior from Thornton, Colo., went 1-0 in three appearances last week. In a doubleheader against Southern Utah, he pitched 2.0 innings of relief, giving up just two hits, while striking out three. On Friday, he pitched one inning of relief in the second game of the series against the Lobos, giving up one hit. The following day, he threw a complete-game win, pitching all nine innings, giving up two runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits.
For the week, Buck pitched 12.0 innings, giving up just one earned run on nine hits for 0.75 ERA. He struck out six and walked just one. On the season, Buck leads the Utes with a 4.11 ERA in a team-high 17 appearances.
Chevalier Has 31-Game MWC Hitting Streak
Senior outfielder Eric Chevalier currently has a 31-game MWC hitting streak. Chevalier had hits in each of the final 21 conference games last year and all 10 this season.
Pena Named MWC Player of the Week
Senior shortstop Jared Pena was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for March 1-7 after leading the Utes to a 3-0 record. Pena hit .571 with two doubles, a home run and six RBI on the week. He also had a stolen base on his only attempt. In the first game against Southern Utah, he went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. In the second game vs. the Thunderbirds, Pena was 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI. On Saturday, Pena was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, with four runs scored and five RBI.
Utes Picked to Finish Fourth in MWC
Utah tied with New Mexico to finish fourth in the MWC in the preseason coaches poll. The Utes and the Lobos collected 12 points apiece in the poll. UNLV, last year's regular-season and tournament champion, received four of the six first-place votes and collected 24 points to capture the top spot in the poll, followed by San Diego State with 22 points. Brigham Young earned 15 points to place third. Air Force ranked sixth with five points.
Franklin Covey Field
Utah plays the majority of its conference home games at state-of-the-art Franklin Covey Field (15,500). The 13,000-seat facility (not including the general admission area) also serves as the home to Salt Lake's AAA baseball team, the Stingers, an affiliate of the Anaheim Angels.

Utah hosts UNLV for a three-game series this Friday-Sunday, April 16-18, at Franklin Covey Field. Friday's game starts at 6 p.m., Saturday's game at 1 p.m., and the Sunday game begins at noon.
