Salt Lake City - University of Utah Swimming and Diving is back for another season and is looking to improve on last season's success. The women return as defending regular season co-champions after finishing 9-2 overall and 6-1 in conference meets in 2003-04. The men are coming off their best year during Head Coach Mike Litzinger's tenure. The men's team finished 7-1 overall and finished second in the conference with a 3-1 mark.
"Both our teams made great leaps within the conference," says Litzinger, "our men can no longer take anyone by surprise, which makes preparing for each meet critical. Our women were tremendous in dual meets last season, and our goal now shifts to finishing out the season strong."
The Utes host six home meets this year. Utah opens the season on October 16th with the annual Ute Senior Meet. The men's team welcomes Notre Dame on the 29th of October, while the women compete in their first Mountain West Conference meet at San Diego State on the 30th of October.
Utah's non-conference schedule also includes TCU and Denver in a three-team meet on November 12-13 at Ute Natatorium. The Utes will travel to Indiana University to compete in the invitational there November 19-21.
"I am very pleased to have a great mix of teams on our schedule this season," comments Litzinger, "Our non-conference slate with Notre Dame, TCU, Denver, and competing at the Indiana Invitational will prepare us well for Mountain West competition."
The Utes round out the season with three home conference meets with Wyoming and Air Force on January 28th and 29th respectively, and in-state rival BYU on February 4th.
"Rounding out our home schedule with three straight conference meets, and finishing with BYU will certainly prepare us well for the conference championships," says Litzinger. "The renewed intensity and competitive atmosphere in the Utah/BYU series has been great. I can't think of a better way to finish up the dual meet season than with the stands packed in swimming's version of rivalry weekend!"
