SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's volleyball team chalked up a 3-0 win over the Utah State Aggies here on Crimson Court this afternoon.
The Utes up to 4-2 for the season while Utah State is now 1-4. Game scores were 30-21, 30-25 and 30-23.
"We had a great week in practice," head coach Beth Launiere said. "We worked hard on defense and I think that's why we played so well tonight."
Utah's defense was stingy as it held its rivals to a .086 hitting percentage (35-26-105) and narrowly edged the Aggies in blocks, 8.0-7.5.
The Utes hit .260 for the match (46-19-104) and were led by Lyndsey Henderson and her match-high 12 kills. She hit .384 for the match (12-4-21). Kindy Peterson led the Aggies with a team-high nine kills.
Tracy Neumeier led all players with 27 assists while Liana Bortoto led with nine digs. Amie Toone led the way with five blocks.
Utah got off to lightning fast starts in games one and three, jumping out to an 8-1 lead in game one and a 9-1 lead in game three. The Utes hit a match-best .364 (17-5-33) in collecting the win in game one.
Game two was tightly contested as Utah State led until it was knotted at 14. Utah built a five-point lead (23-18) but the Aggies rallied to tie it at 24. However, the Utes rattled off six straight points to pocket the game-two victory.
The Utes return to action on Friday, Sept. 17, to host the No. 3-ranked UCLA Bruins. Match time at Crimson Court is set for 7 p.m.
