Volleyball Upends No. 6 UCLA

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's volleyball team rallied behind Connie Dangerfield's 33 digs and Lyndsey Henderson's 22 kills to edge the No. 6 UCLA Bruins on Crimson Court this evening, 3-2.
In a back-and-forth thriller, game scores were 30-27, 27-30, 30-28, 23-30 and 15-12. Utah ups to 5-2 for the season while the Bruins are losers of two straight and fall to 6-2 for the year.
"We've had a lot of big five-game wins here on Crimson Court," head coach Beth Launiere said. "This one has to rank up there among the top."
Dangerfield set a conference record with a match-high 33 digs while Henderson led all attackers with a career-best 22 kills. Henderson hit .372 for the match (22-6-43) and tallied a double-double with another career-high 10 blocks (3 solo).
"That was a big match for Lyndsey," Launiere remarked. "I told her she needed to have a big match and she came through for us, big time!"
The career highs don't stop there, either. In taking down the top-10 squad from Westwood, Calif., Tracy Neumeier had a career high digs (22) as did Shelly Sommerfeldt (15). Sommerfeldt tallied a double-double as well, recording 14 kills for the evening.
Liana Bortoto and freshman standout Emillie Toone also had career bests. Bortoto notched 14 kills and Toone led all Ute attackers with a .409 attack percentage. Her career-best 10 kills came on 22 attempts with only one error.
Utah hit .184 for the match while UCLA hit .162. However, Utah held the edge in team blocks, 15-10.
The Utes return to Crimson Court on Saturday, Sept. 18 to host Northern Colorado (noon) and Saint Mary's (7 p.m.). The three-match series this weekend is part of the Hampton Inn Utah Classic.
