SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's volleyball team opened up action at Crimson Court this afternoon with a 3-0 sweep of the Northern Colorado Bears.
Game scores were 30-24, 30-26 and 30-25. The Utes win their third straight and up to 6-2 for the year. UNC falls to 5-5.
"After last night, today's match could have been disastrous," head coach Beth Launiere said. "But, we kept our composure against Northern Colorado. We weren't as sharp but we took care of business and I'm happy with that."
The defense held UNC to a .132 hitting percentage and forced the Bears into 27 hitting errors. Utah out blocked its rivals, 11-6, and recorded a .267 hitting percentage in the win.
Shelly Sommerfeldt and Lyndsey Henderson led the attack for the Utes. Sommerfeldt had a match-high 14 kills while Henderson tagged on another 11. Reserve Natalie Miller came in to hit .833 for the match, notching five kills on six attempts and no errors.
Henderson's six blocks led Utah with Emillie Toone trailing with five blocks of her own. Tracey Neumeier's 23 assists led the Utes but UNC's Corrinne Chapin had a match-high 37.
Connie Dangerfield led from the back with 21 digs.
The Utes had to ward off a UNC rally to capture the game-one win and had to overcome a UNC squad that raced out to early leads in each of the last two games.
The Utes return to action tonight to host Saint Mary's College on Crimson Court at 7 p.m. It is the third and final match of the Hampton Inn Utah Classic.
