Utes fight hard but couldn’t gain momentum over Bruins
SALT LAKE CITY– Utah Volleyball fought hard against UCLA but couldn't gain consistent momentum against the Bruins Sunday night at the Huntsman Center.
Despite jumping to early leads in three of four sets, the Utes fell to their former conference-mates 3-1, (19-25, 24-26, 25-16, 17-25) marking their third loss of the 2026 season.
SET ONE
Loryn Helgesen put the Utes on the board first and backed it up with a second kill to make set one a 2-0 advantage out the gate. UCLA tied things at three before jumping to a 7-3 lead, prompting Utah to call a timeout.
Princess Atamah contributed two kills followed by an Ashley West kill to get within three of the Bruins, 9-6.
Despite continuing to find ways to dig within three of UCLA, the Utes had a hard time moving past that mark through the center of the set and UCLA ended up being the one to force the technical break, 15-11.
UCLA reached set point first, 24-19, before taking the set 25-19.
SET TWO
Utah shook off set one fast, taking a 4-0 early lead over UCLA to start set two. The Utes kept building the lead with Atamah registering a kill and service ace followed up with a Katelynn Field kill to take a 7-4 lead.
The Utes scoring streak slowed down a bit toward the middle of the set with UCLA taking a 15-12 lead into the technical timeout.
Isabelle Marco dropped an ace followed by a UCLA attack error that brought the Utes within one of UCLA, 19-18, down the stretch. Ashley West and Atamah teamed up on a block to take the lead, 20-19.
Levani Falatea showed major hops on a block assist with Atamah to get within one of UCLA again, 22-21.
UCLA reached set point 24-22 but Utah had other plans tying the set at 24 off a Helgesen kill and forcing extra play for the win.
Ultimately, the Bruins came out on top, 26-24.
SET THREE
Utah once again started quick, taking a 5-1 lead assisted by blocks from Field, Helgesen and Atamah along with a Helgesen kill and UCLA attack error.
The Utes continued to pile on the points, taking an 11-5 lead that received an exclamation mark with an Isabella Mogridge ace. A Bruins service error gave Utah a 15-8 advantage heading into the technical break.
Helgesen brought the fire out of the break on a kill giving Utah a 16-8 lead. Devyn Wiest added her own fast ball to the mix, extending the Utes 20-8 over UCLA down the stretch.
Utah raced to set point, 24-15, and eventually came away with the set win, 25-16 to force a fourth set.
SET FOUR
UCLA started set four with a 6-4 lead that it kept through the technical break, 15-12.
The Bruins held tightly to the lead, 19-13, forcing the Utes to take a timeout to regroup.
Out of the break, Kamryn Gibadlo rocketed a kill to make it 19-14 and Helgesen added one more kill, 20-15.
Utah kept fighting, clawing within five of UCLA, 22-17, but the Bruins took the match, 25-17.
STANDOUT STATS
Utah hits the road to Greeley, Colorado for the UNC Tournament from Sep. 17-19.
