PROVO - The University of Utah women's volleyball team got its Mountain West Conference schedule underway, topping intrastate rival BYU, 3-1, here in Smith Fieldhouse this evening.
The Utah victory came on game scores of 30-26, 23-30, 30-28 and 30-26. Utah ups its record to 8-2, 1-0 in conference tilts, while BYU falls to 5-5 and 0-1 in MWC play.
"It was a tough match," head coach Beth Launiere remarked. "BYU is a difficult place to play and it is a very talented team. I'm just glad that we were able to come away with the win."
The Utes turned it around in the final two games of the match. After chalking up 17 errors between the first two games, Utah only had seven miscues in the second two stanzas (recording only one in the third). Utah's spikers hit .263 in the final two games, including a match-best .333 (13-1-36) in the come-from-behind game three victory.
Lyndsey Henderson led the Ute attack (which hit .174 for the match) with 14 kills while Shelly Sommerfeldt bagged 13 of her own and led the Utes with a .281 (13-4-32) hitting percentage. BYU's Kim Wilson led the Cougars with a match-high 19 kills.
Tracy Neumeier tallied a team-high 23 assists while teammate Kelsie Kartchner recorded 20 of her own. Match-high honors belonged to Lauren Richards of the Cougars. She finished with 46 assists.
Defensively, Connie Dangerfield led the Utes with 18 digs and Liana Bortoto had a team and career high four blocks. Lindsey Evans was one of three double-digit diggers for the Cougars. She finished with 21 while two cougars recorded a match-high five blocks.
Utah got off to a sluggish start in games one and two, going into the break tied, 1-1. The visitors hit a mere .072 in the first two matches, tallying 22 kills and 17 errors on 69 attempts, while BYU hit .111 (25-17-72).
The Utes return to action for a non-conference tilt against Weber State on Tuesday, Sept. 28. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
