Utah Volleyball Closes Out Strong Opening Weekend with Sweep of Oregon State

Utes sweep three straight opponents to start the season for the first time since 2000
SALT LAKE CITY– Utah Volleyball closed out a strong opening weekend against Oregon State with its third straight sweep (25-19, 25-20, 25-20).
The Utes' sweep of the Beavers marked the first time since 2000 that volleyball has opened a season with three straight opponent sweeps.
"I have been challenging the team on showing up consistently and I think there were moments where we dipped a little bit, but I think this group just has resiliency in them," head coach Alyssa D'Errico said. "They have belief and they show up even when it is tough or tired and have to grit it out. I thought we did a really good job showing up and competing today after back-to-back matches."
Outside hitter Kamryn Gibadlo added a milestone of her own, reaching her 100th career ace in the second set, adding to the excitement of an already great weekend for Utah Volleyball.
"She has been an elite server for us since her freshman year—she just has a great feel for it," D'Errico said. "She went back there with confidence behind the end line and probably wasn't happy with what the rest of her game looked like, but I think she knows she can contribute in a lot of ways when other things aren't where she wants them to be. I'm super proud she stepped up with three big time aces to win the set for us."
SET ONE
Oregon State jumped out to a 7-3 lead early in set one, but the Utes slowly chipped away at the lead, tying things up 9-9 off a Gibadlo ace.
Princess Atamah tied things up again later on, 14-14, before Utah took a one-point lead heading into a media timeout, 15-14.
Isabella Mogridge dived for a critical dig to keep the ball alive down the stretch, setting Gibadlo up for a block to give Utah a two-point advantage, 19-17.
Utah stayed relentless at the net, taking a 23-19 lead ahead of a Beavers timeout, and secured the set point out of the break.
The Utes took the first set win, 25-19, over Oregon State after eight ties and four lead changes to start the match.
SET TWO
Oregon State took another early lead to start the second set, 5-1 before Devyn Wiest and Lana Mijacic teamed up on a block to make it 5-2.
Wiest got Utah within two, 6-4, after laying down the hammer on a kill, and Isabelle Marco followed it up with an ace to make it a one-point set, 6-5.
Gibadlo earned her second ace of the day to get the Utes back within two, 12-10, that was followed by a block from Mijacic and Wiest, and a kill from Loryn Helgesen to tie things at 12.
Utah took a three-point lead into Oregon State's final timeout of the set, 19-16, aided by kills from Gibadlo, Mijacic, and Ashley West.
Gibadlo hit career ace No. 100, 101, and 102 in back-to-back-to-back fashion to give the Utes the set two win, 25-20.
SET THREE
For the third time, the Beavers jumped out to an early lead to start the set, 3-0, before an attack error got the Utes on the board, 3-1.
Helgesen put Utah within one of Oregon State, 14-13, with her 11th kill of the day. Helgesen added another kill and block assist later combined with an attack error to give the Utes the lead, 17-16.
Atamah built the lead with a kill of her own, 18-16, followed by a Gibadlo kill to make it 19-16.
Grace Moss checked into the set to serve and hit an ace to give the Utes set point, before West set up the match winning point, 25-20.

Utah comes back to the Huntsman Center next week to host Wyoming, Long Beach State, and No. 4 Pittsburgh in the annual Utah Classic Tournament from Sep. 4-6.
