Utes runaway with match against Wildcats aided by second set 15-0 scoring run
MANHATTAN, Kans.– No. 23 Utah Volleyball (11-4; 3-1) recorded its 10th sweep (25-20, 25-15, 25-23) of 2026 over Kansas State (9-3; 1-3), rebounding nicely after a loss to No. 19 Kansas on Thursday night.
Â
The Utes' convincing win was aided greatly by a 15-0 scoring run while outside hitter Kamryn Gibadlo womaned the service line in the middle of the second set, ripping off three of her six total aces on the night.
Â
"I thought our servers did a really good job going at it from the in-line," head coach Alyssa D'Errico said. "We talked about playing with pace and trying to drive them deep. We just saw some numbers statistically that they struggle with deeper serves, and I thought our team did a really good job executing that part of the service plan."
Â
SET ONE
Utah jumped to a 3-2 lead off two Kansas State attack errors and a Lana Mijacic kill to start set one. The Utes made the match a 5-4 affair before the Wildcats went on a 7-0 scoring run to make things an 11-5 advantage in their favor.
Â
After a timeout, the Utes closed the gap, going on a 7-1 run of their own, aided by kills from Devyn Wiest, Loryn Helgesn, Princess Atamah and an ace from Isabelle Marco to tie things up at 12.
Â
Gibadlo entered the chat a little later to send the first set to the media timeout with the Utes leading, 15-14.
Â
Utah and K-State continued to battle back-and-forth down the stretch with the Utes taking a 20-18 lead and forcing a Wildcat timeout.
Â
Kansas State took one more timeout after Utah took a 22-19 advantage from a Helgesen hot ball, before a Wildcat attack error put the Utes in striking range, 24-19.
Â
Atamah finished the job in the first set for Utah with a kill, 25-20.
SET TWO
Kansas State jumped to a healthy lead to start set two, 6-2, before Utah came storming back to get within one, 6-5.
Â
An ace from Gibadlo gave the Utes the lead, 7-6, followed by a Wildcat error to make it 8-6.
Â
Gibadlo secured one more ace to make it 10-6, followed by one more K-State error to make it an 11-6 set, and forcing a Wildcat timeout.
Â
Utah built up a 12-0 scoring run over Kansas State with Wiest and Gibadlo rocketing kills for a 14-6 lead and Wildcat timeout ahead of the media timeout. Wiest made short work getting to the technical timeout out of K-State's timeout, 15-6, extending the run to 13-0.
Â
A service error finally ended Utah's scoring run at 15, but the Utes kept full control of the set hitting a 20-10 lead.
Â
Despite the Wildcats' best efforts, Gibadlo's third ace down the stretch for set point, followed by a Helgesen kill gave the Utes set two, 25-15.
SET THREE
K-State jumped to an early lead in set three, 3-1, but Utah adjusted and took control off a Mijacic ace, 7-5.
Â
The Wildcats tied the match at nine a few plays later, but a Kansas State service error and Gibadlo kill put the Utes back on top, 11-9.
Â
Utah took a 15-11 lead to trigger the media timeout off a Wiest kill and tightened its grip further out of the break, 16-13, off a Helgesen kill.
Â
The Utes kept the pressure high on Kansas State, jumping to a 21-17 lead off back-to-back kills from Ashley West.
Â
Helgesen and Mijacic teamed up for a block to set up match point, 24-18, before Kansas State made things interesting going on a 5-0 run to get within one of the Utes, 24-23.
Â
Out of a timeout, Utah settled down and took the match, 25-23 off a final Gibadlo kill.
