Utah Volleyball Sweeps Utah Tech in Second Day of UVU Tournament

Saturday’s match marks the first time the Utes have won straight sets to start a season since 2020
OREM, Utah – Utah Volleyball remains undefeated after sweeping Utah Tech (25-20, 25-22, 25-23) during day two of the UVU Tournament.
This marks the first time since 2020 the Utes have started a season with back-to-back sweeps.
"Utah Tech is a very, very good team," head coach Alyssa D'Errico said. "They are incredibly scrappy and we knew they were going to dig a lot of balls and make us work really hard to score. Lots of long rallies, but I thought we stayed in it—our attackers were physical."
Utah has a chance to finish the weekend strong at home in the Huntsman Center against Oregon State on Sunday, Aug. 30 with first serve set for 1 p.m. MT.
"We are super excited to get back in front of our home fans, in our venue, in our arena," D'Errico said. "We get a chance to play another match against a really good opponent and hopefully get a little better on the serve side of the ball. I think our serving has been a strength in our two exhibitions and then has not showed up in our first two matches. I'm hoping we can get that rolling a little bit."
SET ONE
Kamryn Gibadlo put Utah on the board first with a monster kill following a long rally to start the match. Utah quickly extended that lead to 5-1, after Katelynn Field got her hands on a block.
Utah Tech made it a one-point set by the middle of the game, 10-9 and then later tied the Utes, 11-11.
The Utes and Trailblazers stayed tied down the stretch, 19-19, before Ashley West smashed the ball to go ahead 20-19. West and Field later teamed up on a block to give Utah a 22-19 lead. An attack error from Utah Tech resulted in set point for the Utes with West securing the first set win, 25-20.
SET TWO
DyBorrah Johnson got the Utes started in the second set, tying things up 1-1 with the Trailblazers. Set two stayed exciting early on, recording four ties and one lead change before the Utes pulled ahead 7-4.
Utah Tech battled back to take a 14-11 lead near the halfway point of the set, but Utah had some fight in them too, challenging a touch that put them within one, 14-13.
The Utes finally took the lead back off a Field kill, 20-19. Gibadlo built on that lead, 21-19 with a kill of her own before Utah Tech had to take a timeout after an attack error put Utah up 22-19.
Field gave Utah set point, 24-22, before Loryn Helgesen hit the second set winning kill, 25-22.
SET THREE
Utah Tech took an early 3-1 lead over Utah in set three, but Gibadlo and Helgesen tied things up quickly with back-to-back kills, 3-3. An attack error by the Trailblazers on the next rally gave the Utes their first lead of the set, 4-3.
The Utes and Trailblazers battled back and forth through the third set, recording eight ties and two lead changes by the time the score hit 13-13. Levani Falatea put a kill on the board to make it 14-13, followed by Johnson drilling her second kill of the day for a 15-13 lead ahead of a timeout.
Utah and Utah Tech tied things up for a 10th time in the third set, 19-19, before an attack error from the Utes resulted in the third lead change of the set, 20-19. The Utes tied things up for the 11th and 12th time, 23-23 before taking set point off a Helgesen kill.
Utah completed its second sweep of the weekend with Sierra Grizzle keeping the ball alive with a dig to set up Helgesen's final kill of the day, 25-23.
