MS Society Honors Utah's Meyer, Turner

SALT LAKE CITY - The National Multiple Sclerosis Society Utah State Chapter and the McCarthey Family will honor three University of Utah athletes at its Dinner of Champions on Thursday, Sept. 16.
The society has awarded football coach Urban Meyer Sportsperson of the Year, the 2003 football team as Co-Team of the Year and volleyball standout Kim Turner as Female Athlete of the Year.
In his first season at Utah, Meyer led his Utes to a 10-2 mark, a conference championship, a bowl victory and a No. 21 ranking in the final poll. Meyer was tabbed the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year and became the first MWC coach (just the second non-BCS coach) to win The Sporting News National Coach of the Year.
Turner capped a successful career with AVCA third-team All-America honors. She was named the co-Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and led the league in hitting percentage (.434) and points per game (5.61). She was second in kills (4.53) and blocks (1.47).
In Utah's career record book, Turner ranks first in kills (1,620), total blocks (670), block assists (589) and hitting percentage (.324). She is also third in block solos (81) and fourth in attempts (3,306).
The 2003 football squad, named "Co-Team of the Year" with Brigham Young's men's volleyball team, won its first MWC title outright since 1957 and ended the season with a 17-0 victory over Conference USA champion Southern Mississippi in the Liberty Bowl. Utah also chalked up wins over BCS members California and No. 19-ranked Oregon.
The fundraiser dinner will be held at the Little America Hotel on 500 South Main starting at 6 p.m. Proceeds from the dinner go towards research projects and local client programs.
