SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's volleyball team capped a successful weekend by winning its third straight match this week, downing the undefeated Saint Mary's College Gaels this evening, 3-1.
Game scores were 30-27, 27-30, 30-26, 30-27. The Utes, who have won four straight, improve to 7-2 for the season while the Gaels receive their first blemish, falling to 9-1.
"Both team went five games last night and we had a match this morning," head coach Beth Launiere said. "I think both teams were mentally tired and this one went to the team who could stick it out mentally.
"(Saint Mary's) was a good team. We expended a lot of energy last night against UCLA and I'm proud of this team for staying with it. We upped our game in the third and fourth."
Shelly Sommerfeldt and Lyndsey Henderson led the two-pronged attack, tallying a match-high 13 kills. SMC's Kaui Salzman also had 13 kills.
But, this was a defensive match as Utah hit a mere .092 while SMC hit .028. Utah was forced into 38 errors while the Gaels 43 and SMC held the edge at the net, racking up 19.0 blocks to Utah's 14.0.
SMC's Mariko Coverdale led with a match-high eight blocks. Henderson and Emillie Toone led the Utes with five blocks each.
Kelsie Kartchner led all players with 20 digs and had a double-double with 23 assists. Mandy Bible's 36 assists was the standard for the match.
Neither team got off to a great start as SMC hit .000 for the first two games and Utah .036. However, After a game two loss, Utah hit a swift .300 (18-6-40) to nab the third game victory and the momentum. Utah held a nine-point lead in the fourth frame (26-17) but had to ward off a late rally by the Gaels. SMC cut the Ute lead to two, 29-27 before Utah finished off the match.
Utah opens conference play next week when it ventures to BYU on Friday, Sept. 24. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
