Simons Named To U.S. World Junior Team

SALT LAKE CITY -- Sophomore cross country skier Casey Simons has recently been named to the 2005 Junior World Championships Team, joining five other men and six women skiers. The team will compete in Rowaniemi, Finland, in March. The announcement was made after the U.S. Cross Country Championships, which were held at Soldier Hollow, Utah.
"Casey has worked hard for this selection," said Head Coach Kevin Sweeney. "It is a great reward and honor for him to represent the United States at the World Junior Championships. The best junior skiers in the world will be there competing. I had confidence Casey would make this selection. He has trained very well and his dedication is on par with the best in world. It will be a very exciting season watching Casey race knowing he has a chance for some great results for the U.S. Team."
The points criteria are set such that athletes selected are able to ski to a level required to compete at the World Junior Championships, which generally equates to a top-100 Junior Ranking for automatic selection and top-250 World Junior Ranking for consideration and as per the first FIS list for 2005.
Last season, Simons skied 59th in the 30-km classical (1:38:10.1) and 10-km freestyle (27:07.0) at the World Nordic Junior Championships. The Park City, Utah, native also made his mark at the Chevy Truck U.S. Cross Country Junior Olympic Championships, winning the 1-km FS sprint event.
The nordic skier also finished first in the 15-km skate and 10-km sprint at the 2003 Junior Nationals, ranking second on the USSA points list.

Women - Morgan Smyth (18; Vernon, VT/Northern Michigan University), Tazlina Mannix (18; Talkeetna, AK/Alaska Pacific University Nordic Ski Center), Laura Spector (17; Waitsfield, VT/Green Mountain Valley School), Liz Stephens (17; East Burke, VT/Burke Mountain Academy), Morgan Arritola (18; Fairfield, ID/Sun Valley SEF) and Kaitie McElroy (19; Bethel, ME/Bates College).
