INNSBRUCK, Austria -- With one week off between intercollegiate races, Ute skiers Ben Thornhill, April Mancuso and Sandra Gredig took rank with some of the best college racers in the world at Innsbruck, Austria by competing at the 2005 World University Games last week.
Sophomore Gredig (Davos, Switzerland) earned the respect of the international competition, skating to a sixth-place finish in the women's sprint event. The nordic skier followed that top-10 performance with a 27th-place finish in the 5-km sprint.
Sophomore Sandra Gredig has finished with four top-10 finishes this season within the RMISA standings. |
"Sandra's performance at the World University Games was fantastic," said Head Coach Kevin Sweeney. "She has been training very well and it was great to see her ski so well."
Senior All-Americans Mancuso and Thornhill represented the Ute alpine team, skiing in both the slalom and giant slalom. Mancuso (Lake Tahoe, Calif.), skiing for Team U.S.A., finished 16th in the GS and 28th in the SL events, while Thornhill (Whistler, British Columbia), skiing for Team Canada, placed 55th in the first run of the SL and finished with a second run mark of 38th. Unfortunately, the GS specialist wasn't able to finish the event, which he was one of the favorites to win.
"Sandra, Ben and April have been great ambassadors for the U.," added Sweeney. "The results are dynamite amongst top competitors from all over the world. It's unfortunate Ben had trouble in his first run of the GS as we were hoping for a medal in his signature event, but that's part of ski racing ... you have to put your starts in. It was still a great preparation race for him. This kind of experience only helps us achieve our goals. I'm super proud of this group. It's part of our goals to showcase the university and the program at top level events worldwide."
