SALT LAKE CITY - Barry Johnson has joined the University of Utah athletics staff as its new head strength and conditioning coach.
Johnson comes to the U. via Idaho State. For the last two seasons, Johnson oversaw all of the Bengal sports but primarily focused on ISU's football and basketball teams.
Prior to ISU, Johnson worked for the University of Virginia from 1995-99. After a brief time as an assistant strength coach in 1995-96, Johnson became UVA's head strength coach in 1996. Johnson, honored as the ACC's Strength Coach of the Year in 1998, worked with all Cavalier sports.
Johnson also had stops as an assistant strength coach at Washington State (1992-93) and at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. (1990-92). At WSU, Johnson spent his final season as the interim head strength coach for the Cougar football program.
His career began at Brigham Young where he started as a student athletics trainer in 1987. Johnson graduated from BYU with a degree in physical education in 1989. He then moved to California for one summer where he worked with noted sports scientist Don Chu.
Johnson prepped at Teton High School in Driggs, Idaho, where he lettered in football, wrestling and track and field.
He and his wife Lori have six children: Chelsea, Cody, Skye, Colt, Shaylee and Tahnea.
