SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's and men's swimming and diving teams are poised to begin their conference title defense with the preseason coaches poll tabbing the women's team to finish second and the men's team fifth.
"The preseason poll is exciting in that it means competition is around the corner," noted head coach Mike Litzinger. "Both our men's and women's team have tunnel vision right now and are concentrating on training. Their goals are very specific this season, and success at the NCAA and Mountain West Conference levels are a priority. Through hard work in the classroom, weight room, and pool, I believe that both of these teams have the potential to surprise a lot of people."
Both of Utah's programs won the Mountain West Conference title last year and the women were picked second on 54 points and two first-place votes. The men took fifth in the poll, garnering eight points.
The Utes return six conference champions from last year's teams with the women returning 16 letterwinners and men welcoming 13 letterwinners back.
The poll selected BYU to win the men's race. The Cougars netted 23 points and three first-place nods. On the women's side, UNLV was the favorite with 59 points and five first-place votes.
Utah begins the season on Thursday, Oct. 13, when it hosts BYU and Villanova at the Ute Natatorium.
