THIS WEEK:
The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams start defense of their MWC regular season titles with the women hosting two MWC opponents, San Diego State and UNLV, while the men welcome just UNLV's team. Utah's women's team is 1-1 on the season, while the men are 2-0. The women take on San Diego State Friday, Nov. 11, at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 12, the Utes host UNLV in a dual meet at noon. Both meets take place at Ute Natatorium.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Michael Litzinger:
"It will be a great weekend to open MWC swimming and diving competition. SDSU is a rapidly-improving women's team that shows a lot of heart and will race us until the last event. UNLV comes to us as one of the best teams in the league. If you enjoy college swimming, there will be some classic match-ups in the sprints, and distance events."
DENVER RECAP:
DENVER, Colo. - The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams split against Denver last weekend. The men beat the Pioneers 193-141, improving to 2-0 on the season, while the women fell, 157-175 to fall to 1-1 on the season. It snapped their streak of 10 straight dual-meet wins.
The men's team won 12 of the 18 events, setting a Denver pool record of 1 minute, 23.39 seconds in the 200 free relay (Matthew Bailey, David Maasberg, David Johnson and Jonathan Larsen).
Other men's top performances for the men were: Adam Oliver (1650 free, 16:23.74), George Evans (200 free, 1:44.30), Andrew Cole (100 back, 51.86), Larsen (50 free, 20.57; 100 free, 45.10), Sterling Richards (1-meter, 335.80 points; 3-meter, 362.95 points), Andrew Brown (100 fly, 51.77; 200 fly, 1:56.92) and Jeremy Clark (500 free, 4:41.46).
Top placers for the women were: Rachael Curci (1650 free, 17:30.87), Amber Walter (100 back, 1:04.16), Jennifer Fredsall (50 free, 23.34; 100 fly 56.81) and Kelsey Patterson (1-meter, 274.45; 3-meter, 280.30 points).
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE:
The Aztec women's team is currently 0-1 overall and in the conference after dropping an Oct. 22 MWC dual meet against UNLV, 128-167. SDSU recently finished sixth out of eight teams at the Pacific Tiger Invitational Oct. 29.
SCOUTING UNLV:
The UNLV women's team is 2-1 overall, 2-0 MWC after defeating TCU 170-130 on Nov. 4. The women also defeated SDSU on Oct. 22, 167-128 in their season opener. UNLV's lone loss was to then-No. 17-ranked Arizona State.
The men's team is 2-0 overall, 1-0 MWC after a 173-121 victory over the Horned Frogs of TCU. UNLV started the season by knocking off the-No. 25 Arizona State by one point (121-120).
Both UNLV squads won the 2005 MWC Championship Meet to take home the program's first-ever championship title.
