Utah Head Coach Ray Giacoletti
"We needed to get off to a good start and we did that tonight. I thought Johnnie Bryant did his best job running the team tonight. We have some young guys playing some crucial minutes. We did a really good job on (David) Chiotti and Bryant Markson did a great job on (Mark) Walters. We worked on doubling Chiotti all week, but Luke (Nevill) and Chris (Jackson) played great defense."
"We need to get a bad taste in our mouths or a chip on our shoulders. We need to be the aggressor and prove to ourselves mentally to be more aggressive."
"Bryant (Markson) was very solid tonight with only one turnover. We have him playing two different position and he is our energizer guy on the court."
"We will come back tomorrow and get ready for BYU. It's one of those opportunities to play your rival, so we will see how we play on the road. We are going to try to come out and be the aggressor, but when the ball goes up it's always even."
Utah Sophomore Guard Johnnie Bryant
"We need to prove something to everyone. We had a rough pre-season, but now we are 1-0 and that is all that matters. I thought Bryant Markson was incredible tonight. He got it going on both sides of the ball tonight and got the team going. We had a few defensive errors towards the end, but we got the win and that is all that matters."
Utah Senior Forward Bryant Markson
"My shot hasn't been going down, so I've been putting in extra minutes and it paid off tonight. I watched last year's game (against New Mexico) and that got me fired up. My last dunk got the team pumped up and we made a big stop the next time down."
"Our last two practices have been great and that has really improved our confidence, and we think we are the top team in the Mountain West Conference."
New Mexico Head Coach Ritchie McKay
"They (Utah) got confident and it was a little easier for them to shoot those threes, but I thought we got some good looks--I honestly did--but 32 percent from the floor... We've had some road woes in terms of shooting since we've been here, and I'm thinking about maybe seeing if we could install our old rims in different arenas, maybe that will work."
"You were here last year. Chiotti scored on Andrew Bogut time and time again. And no disrespect to Chris Jackson or Luke Nevill, but they're not Andrew Bogut, so I thought he got some similar looks and I'm surprised he didn't make them, but it wasn't Dave's fault we lost the game. We didn't get to the line until there was 14 minutes left in the game, and I thought that was a key to the game. We made a conscious effort to get to the rim. I thought our guys did it and I think we got a little frustrated when we didn't get the calls, but that is part of it. You gotta keep playing through it. We gave effort, but just didn't make shots."
