SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's basketball team jumped out to a 12-0 in the first four minutes of Tuesday night's exhibition contest with Fort Lewis College. The Utes maintained a double-digit advantage for the remainder of the evening, pulling away from the Skyhawks for an 81-38 victory at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Heidi Carlsen (Sr., St. George, Utah) and Morgan Warburton (So., Helper, Utah) each hit three-pointers in Utah's opening flurry. Warburton finished with a game-high 17 points and also grabbed four steals. Carlsen was 3-for-3 from three-point range and wrapped up her night with 11 points.
Marie Warner (Jr., Hamilton, Ont.) and Kalee Whipple (Fr., Hiko, Nev.) each tacked on 12 points to give the Utes four double-figure scorers. Whipple also pulled down a game-high six rebounds. Kelly Goodman scored nine points to lead the way for Fort Lewis.
The Utes' Hennasea Tokumura (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) drove down the lane for a layup midway through the first half and pushed Utah's lead over the 20-point mark, 28-7. Utah finished the first half on a 9-0 run, capped by a Warburton three-pointer. That spurt gave the Utes a 28-point advantage at the intermission, 45-17.
A pair of Shauna Murphy (Sr., Sudbury, Ont.) free throws with 13:37 remaining pushed Utah's lead to 31 points, 52-21. Halie Sawyer (Fr., Panguitch, Utah) converted a layup on a beautiful feed from Sasha McKinnon (So., Langley, B.C.) with 7:00 left. Sawyer's bucket pushed Utah out to a 41-point advantage, 70-29. The Utes cruised from there, wrapping up exhibition play with a 43-point victory.
Utah opens its regular season Friday night on the road in Spokane, Wash. The Utes will face off with Gonzaga at 8 p.m. MT at the McCarthey Athletic Center. Utah plays its home opener Monday night at the Huntsman Center, with tipoff set for 7 p.m.
