Utah Swimming and Diving Maintains Lead at MWC Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Both Utah's men's and women's swimming and diving teams maintained their lead over the field with 263 and 258 points, respectively, after day two at the Mountain West Conference Swimming & Diving Championships at Oklahoma City Community College.
Amber Walter won the 50 free title with a time of 22.79 seconds, automatically qualifying for the NCAA meet. Walter's time is also the second fastest in MWC and Utah school history. Walter missed out on the Utah school record of 22.78 held by Heidi Hausknecht. Jennifer Fredsall finished third in the event (23.36) and provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet in the process. Amy Barefield finished seventh (23.69) in the event.
Walter, Barefield, Fredsall and Alison McInturff won Utah's first MWC women's 200-yard freestyle relay title, setting a new MWC and Utah program all-time record (1:32.47) in the process. The Utes also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with their mark.
Sterling Richards captured his third straight men's 3-meter diving championship with a score of 361.10.Richards outdistanced himself from second place by 30.40 points.
Rachael Curci finished second in the 500 free with a time of 4 minutes, 55.00 seconds. Shannon McQueen finished eighth in the event with a time of 5 minutes, 05.50 seconds. In the 200 IM, McInturff finished fourth (2:04.69), while Meghan Demchuk finished eighth (2:07.76).
On the men's side, Jeremy Clark finished fifth in the 500 free with a time of 4 minutes, 28.31 seconds, while Adam Oliver finished eighth in 4 minutes, 33.84 seconds. Andrew Cole finished fifth in the 200 IM with a time of 1 minute, 51.19 seconds.
In the 50 free, Jonathan Larsen placed fifth with a time of 20.24 seconds, which also provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA meet. David Maasberg finished seventh in 20.83 seconds. Larsen, Maasberg, Matt Bailey and David Johnson finished fourth in the 200 free relay with a time of 1 minute, 21.66 seconds.
Defending champion UNLV trails the Utes in men's action with 252 points, followed by BYU (222), Air Force and Wyoming (212 points each) and TCU (184). The Cougars hold the No. 2 spot in the women's events with 211 points, followed by UNLV (202), Wyoming (143), Colorado State and TCU (140 points each), New Mexico (128), San Diego State (77) and Air Force (65).
Day three of the championships is set for Friday, Feb. 24, with preliminary events at 10 a.m. CST and finals competition at 6 p.m. The MWC Swimming & Diving Championships conclude Saturday, Feb. 25, following the 6 p.m. finals events and the announcement of the individual and team awards.
