SALT LAKE CITY - The Mountain West Conference honored eight University of Utah skiing student-athletes by awarding them the league's 2005-06 Scholar Athlete Award.
On the women's side, freshman Mikaela Grassl (3.81, pre-architecture), senior Nicole Naef (3.60, exercise and sport science), sophomore Sara Schweiger (3.55, undecided) and senior Anna Sprague (3.95, chemistry) were honored.
From the men's team, senior Jess Kiesel (3.64, environmental studies), junior Gaspar Perricone (3.51, political science), senior Ben Thornhill (3.63, finance) and freshman Scott Veenis (3.65, undecided) were also recognized.
In all, 54 Utah student-athletes were recognized.
A total of 535 student-athletes league-wide were named Mountain West Conference Scholar Athletes for 2005-06. To be eligible for selection student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition for their athletic team.
