SALT LAKE CITY - The Mountain West Conference named 54 University of Utah student-athletes 2005-06 Scholar Athletes. Ten of Utah's 54 students recorded a 3.90 or better, led by freshman Lauren Endersen. The women's track and field athlete recorded a perfect 4.0 in biology.
Also tallying a 3.90 or better were Tanner Folster (men's swimming and diving, biology, 3.97), Staci Hemingway (softball, sport management, 3.96), Natalie Miller (volleyball, economics, 3.96), Anna Sprague (skiing, chemistry, 3.95), Katie Battazzo (women's soccer, environmental studies, 3.94), Dominique D'Oliveira (gymnastics, sociology, 3.92), Nicole Hugie (women's track and field/cross country, nursing, 3.91), Lacey Lavarias (volleyball, parks, recreation and tourism, 3.91) and Marissa Martin (women's swimming and diving, human development and family studies, 3.90).
Utah's 54 student-athletes was the third-highest number among league institutions. BYU led the way with 135 student-athletes honored followed by New Mexico (80). Wyoming also had 54 while TCU (53), Air Force (52), Colorado State (44), UNLV (35) and San Diego State (28) round out the rest.
A total of 535 student-athletes league-wide were named Mountain West Conference Scholar Athletes for 2005-06. To be eligible for selection student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition for their athletic team.
