THIS WEEK: TIME TO TRAIN
The Alpine and Nordic teams have this weekend off and will use the extra time to train in preparation for the upcoming Denver Invitational.
"We're doing our normal training routine," comments head alpine coach Jaka Korencan. "We're also doing a little bit of freeskiing to stay loose and have fun."
"TAGUE" LINE
University of Utah freshman skier Tague Thorson finished second in the combined standings at the World University Games in Torino, Italy. Thorson was the only US skier to finish in the top-10 in all three alpine events. Thorson placed ninth in the super G, sixth in the slalom and fourth in the giant slalom.
"I'm really proud of him," says coach Korencan. "He's maturing as a racer and really having a great season. Being the top American at a world event is a great accomplishment."
Thorson will rejoin the team in two weeks at the University of Denver Invitaional.
LAST WEEK: MONTANA STATE INVITATIONAL
Utah enjoyed a strong finish for the second consecutive week at the MSU Invitational Bozeman, Mont. The Utes ended the weekend third overall with 359.5 points, with the University of Colorado leading with 449.5 points. The invitational will conclude February 4th in Aurora, Colo.
Freshman Snorri Einarrson enjoyed two second-place finishes to lead the Utes over the weekend. The Tromso, Norway native finished second in Saturday's Men's 20K classic and Friday's 10K freestyle.
Teammate Fabian Figi also placed fifth on Saturday, giving the Utes two skiers in the top 10. Ben Fick placed 14th with a time of 1:07:35.59.
"It was awesome to see Snorri fighting for the win again," commented Head Coach Eli Brown. "That guy is a competitor...he definitely doesn't like to finish second. It was also nice to see that Fabian could have a good race after crashing last weekend."
On the women's side, the trio of Sara Schweiger, Annelies Cook and Sarah MacCarthy led the way for the Utes. Schweiger finished fifth in Saturday's 15K classic, posting a time of 54:54.48. Cook was 13th with a time of 56:31.11 and MacCarthy finished 16th with a time of 57:06.48.
"The women's races went ok, though we didn't have as good of results as last week, said Coach Brown. "I'm really looking forward to see what we can do in Denver."
NEXT WEEK: DENVER INVITATIONAL
Utah will head to Denver to compete in the Denver Invitational Feb. 2-3. The RMISA-sanctioned event will feature regional rivals Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada.
Utah last visited Denver in 2005, where the Utes led after day one and finished second overall. Gaspar Perricone placed 14th in the GS, his best finish of the season.
