SALT LAKE CITY - With three players in double figures in kills, the Utah women's volleyball team defeated New Mexico, 3-0, on Crimson Court on Friday, Oct. 5.
Chelsey Sandberg had a career day for Utah (7-8, 4-2 MWC), with 10 kills on .562 hitting, recording four blocks. Kathryn Haynie had 10 kills and 14 digs on the night while Whitney Webb tallied 11 kills and four blocks. Lori Baird had nine kills and nine blocks.
New Mexico (12-5, 3-2 MWC) came into the game ranked second in the Mountain West Conference.
Although the Utes led by as many as seven points in game one, 29-23, at game point. However, New Mexico rallied with a six-point drive to tie the score, 29-29. The two teams matched each other point-for-point through the next few points. With the score again tied, 31-31, Utah took advantage of an attack error by the Lobos Rose Morris before Webb finished the game off with a kill for the 33-31 win.
Game two was close throughout, with neither team able to gain more than a four point advantage at any point in the game, with the lead going back and fourth, including 12 ties. Kate Robison tallied three kills and six digs in the third game.
Game three also saw a tight contest, with the Lobos leading by as many as three and Utah holding as much as a four-point lead. Tied 28-28, the Utes scored three of the next four points to take the win. Webb had a kill in the final drive while Sandberg and Robison teamed up on a block, and Haynie finished the game off with a kill.
"I felt like we played with more composure tonight," head coach Beth Launiere said. "Tonight (the team) came in ready. New Mexico did a great job on defense and we didn't get rattled. The whole team responded tonight."
Other standouts for Utah included Keisha Fisher with 22 assists and four digs and Stephanie Shardlow with 22 assists and five digs.
For New Mexico, Jeannie Fairchild tallied 13 digs while Jade Michaelsen had 27 assists and 12 digs. Anna Lehne recorded six blocks. Taylor Hadfield scored seven kills.
Utah continues in MWC play on Saturday, Oct. 6, against TCU at 7 p.m.
