Utah Swimming Awaits Arizona State and UNLV

THIS WEEK:
University of Utah swimming and diving will be in action this weekend. The Utah men will travel to Tempe Ariz., for a meet with Arizona State on Friday, Nov. 9, at 2:00 p.m. Both the men and women will then host UNLV on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 2:00 p.m., at Ute Natatorium.
UTE NOTES:
The men will face Arizona State on Friday, followed by their conference season opener with preseason favorite UNLV on Saturday. The meet with the Rebels will be the first home dual meet for the team this season. Utah will get a boost from Michel DeCarolis in the 400 IM and breaststroke events. DeCarolis did not compete versus Denver. Also look for the Ute freshmen to be relied upon to continue improving, giving the Utes the depth to compete for a MWC crown this season.
The Utes are 0-1 on the season after a tough loss to Denver on Oct. 17, by a score of 168.5-111.5. In the meet with the Pioneers, Ute freshman Garret Beaman won three events and was named MWC Swimmer of the Week for his efforts.
Utah's head coach Greg Winslow returns to Arizona State after serving as assistant coach of the Sun Devils for four years before he came to the Utes.
The Ute women await UNLV on Saturday and enter the meet 1-0 in MWC competition. The Utes are coming off losses to Arkansas and Denver on Oct. 27. In the meet against Arkansas and Denver, freshman Natalie Edge won the 50 free and 100 free. This weekend, Utah will count on strong performances from Jennifer Fredsall in the free and fly events. The Utes will also hope that Edge can continue her stellar start to the season in the sprint free events.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
ARIZONA STATE - The Sun Devils boast three of the top eight distance free swimmers in the nation and will be one of the toughest teams that Utah will face this season. Arizona State also has a very strong diving team which Utah will attempt to counter with strong performances in the stroke events.
UNLV - The Rebel men are the preseason favorite to win the MWC and boast a strong medley relay team and always have good swimmers in the breast and back events. UNLV defeated Arizona State earlier in the season 158.5-143.5.
The UNLV women are very solid all around and will compete in Provo, Utah, against BYU on Nov. 9, making it two meets in two days for the Rebels. The meet will be the first dual meet of the season for the Rebel women.

"This weekend offers an opportunity for our men to find out what kind of team we will be this year. We have tough back-to-back meets and it will give us a good feel for where we are at this early in the season.
"Our women are excited for UNLV. The Rebels are a solid team all-around and we need to use this meet as something that will give us a boost to get through the middle part of our season."
