SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah assistant Nordic coach Kristina Casey was recently named to the coaching staff for the World Junior/U23 World Championships, held in Poland in February 2008. Kristina and four other coaches from across the country will lead America's top young skiers towards international excellence at the championships in Poland.
Over 30 coaches from around the country applied for the trip.
"It is a statement of Kristina's drive and commitment that she was selected to coach on this trip," said Eli Brown, Director of Skiing. "Although she is new to collegiate coaching, she has already proven herself as one of the best in the country. It will be hard to have her gone for two weeks in February, but great to have her exposed to the high level of racing that she will experience in Europe."
Casey is in her first year as a coach at Utah. She was an All-American cross-country racer for the Utes. Casey has coached competitive junior programs in Idaho, including leading the Junior Nordic Program in Boise.
"The last time I was in Europe was when I was a freshman at the U and was in Switzerland competing at the World Junior Championships in 1998," Casey said. "I am really excited about the opportunity to be a coach at the championships. My goal is to help the athletes out so that they can perform to their potential. I think that I am going to be testing skis a lot and I am excited to get the athletes on the best boards. These US skiers have a lot going for them and they have been training hard. I hope we rock it when we are there."
