SALT LAKE CITY - A pair of double-doubles led the University of Utah women's basketball team over UNLV Thursday night at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Freshman Kalee Whipple (Hiko, Nev.) and sophomore Morgan Warburton (Helper, Utah) led the Utes to a 70-55 victory over the Lady Rebels.
Whipple tallied the fourth double-double of her young career with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Meanwhile, Warburton recorded her first with a 19-point, 10-rebound effort. Faye Muller led UNLV, tallying a double-double of her own with 11 points and 10 boards.
Utah (16-9, 9-3 MWC) used a 9-0 spurt to create some separation late in the first half. The Utes were up 17-13 late in the first half, but used the outburst, which was keyed by a Marie Warner (Jr., Hamilton, Ont.) three-pointer, to take a 13-point lead. UNLV (10-14, 4-8 MWC) scored the last four points of the half, but the Utes still led by nine, 26-17, at the intermission.
Utah used some red-hot shooting to take control of the contest early in the second half. The Utes hit eight of their first 10 field-goal attempts in the second half and opened up a 20-point lead. Whipple and Warburton hit back-to-back three-pointers during the outburst, which saw Utah outscore UNLV 17-6 to open the second period.
Warburton capped the run with a fast-break layup on a nice downcourt pass from Heidi Carlsen (Sr., St. George, Utah). That bucket gave Utah a 20-poitn lead, 43-23, just less than six minutes into the second half.
Utah led by as many as 21 in the second half, when Halie Sawyer (Fr., Panguitch, Utah) hit her second triple of the season. That three-pointer gave Utah a 51-30 lead with 11 minutes remaining. UNLV then made a bit of a run. With some Utah backups in the contest, the Lady Rebels pulled within eight over the next six minutes.
Sequoia Holmes, UNLV's leading scorer, was in foul trouble for much of the evening. But she capped a 17-4 run with a three-pointer to get the Lady Rebels back within single digits, 55-47.
Warburton pushed Utah's lead back into double digits on the next possession, hitting a jumper in the lane. The Utes' lead never dipped below double digits again. Utah hit nine of 10 free-throw attempts over the final three minutes to put the victory on ice.
In addition to the double-doubles from Whipple and Warburton, Utah point guard Brette Ulsaker (Fr., McPherson, Kan.) tied a season-high with seven assists. Ulsaker also tallied seven points. Warner recorded eight points off the bench, while Sawyer scored seven in a reserve role.
Utah will be in action again Sunday, when they travel to Fort Worth, Texas for a matchup with TCU. Tipoff for the Utes-Lady Frogs clash is set for 2 p.m. CST.
