TAOS RIVER/RED RIVER, N.M. - The University of Utah Skiin' Utes finished day one at the UNM Invitational tied for third place with the host Lobos. The team looks to improve on three-consecutive third place finishes tomorrow.
Leading the male alpine contingent was sophomore blur Scott Veenis, whose time of 1:56.07 earned him fifth place in the giant slalom. Freshman phenom Tague Thorson was close behind, clocking a two-run time of 1:56.63 to finish ninth.
The women downhillers were paced by sophomore Mikaela Grassl, who finished third in the women's GS with a combined time of 2:00.31. Close behind was two-time Olympian Chirine Njeim (sixth, 2:00.66).
In the men's 10K classic, former world junior champion Even Sletten had one of his best finishes of the season, finishing in 30:25.1 to take fifth place. Senior Casey Simons enjoyed his best finish of the year, taking 13th with a time of 31:29.1.
Sarah MacCarthy finished fifth (18:58.2) in the women's 5K classic to lead Utah. Annalies Cook gave the team two top-ten finishers, placing seventh with a time of 1:05.5.
