ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of Utah baseball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Friday night at the hands of New Mexico. The Lobos held the Utes' bats in check for much of the evening in a 9-1 decision at Isotopes Park.
Utah (7-15, 0-1 MWC) didn't score until the seventh inning, when Jay Brossman hit his sixth home run of the season. But that was all the offense the Utes could muster against Bobby Lafromboise, the New Mexico starting pitcher. Brossman was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Utes, but his teammates combined for only four other hits against the Lobo hurler.
Lafromboise improved his record to 4-1 on the season. He tossed eight innings, allowing seven hits and striking out six. Utah's starting pitcher, Lucas Trinnaman, fell to 0-4. Three of the five runs Trinnaman allowed came in the third inning. That would prove to be more than the Lobos would need.
New Mexico (12-15, 1-0 MWC) added two more runs in the sixth to go on top 5-0. Brossman's round-tripper put Utah on the scoreboard in the seventh. But the Lobos tallied two more runs in both the seventh and eighth innings, cruising to the eight-run win.
Ian Hollick and Derek Pilkington did most of the damage for New Mexico. Pilkington was 3-for-5 with three RBIs in the contest, while Hollick was 2-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs.
Defense was an issue for the Utes, who committed three errors. Those miscues led to four unearned runs for New Mexico.
The Utes and Lobos will play game two of their three-game set Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
