OREM, Utah - The University of Utah baseball team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against Utah Valley State Tuesday night at the UVSC Baseball Stadium. But the Utes couldn't do much more damage against Wolverine starter Marcus Moore as Utah Valley came back to take a 10-4 win.
Utah left fielder Dustin Hennis smacked an opposite field home run off Moore in the first with second baseman Corey Shimada and first baseman Jay Brossman aboard. Hennis' sixth dinger of the season gave the Utes an early three-run advantage.
Utah Valley (15-23) got a single run back in the bottom of the second when Jace Brinkerhoff hit a solo home run off Utah starter Lucas Trinnaman to straightaway center field. The Utes got that run back in the top of the third when Hennis plated Shimada with an RBI groundout to make it 4-1.
But the Wolverines knocked Trinnaman around in the bottom of the frame, scoring three times to tie the contest at 4-4. Meanwhile, Moore was finding his stride. The UVSC starter put five straight goose eggs on the board to keep Utah at bay while the Wolverine offense went to work against the Utah bullpen. Utah Valley grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fourth against Greg Krause, hanging a pair of runs on him to go up 6-4.
Although they didn't need it, the Wolverines got some insurance in the seventh. Tyler Garretson singled and later scored on a Derrick Thomas base hit. An Austin Heaps hit knocked John James out of the game, after he held UVSC scoreless in the fifth and sixth. Geoff Wolfgramm came on and struck out Brinkerhoff. However, Wolverine designated hitter Josh Hinckley then hit a three-run, opposite field home run off Wolfgramm to give UVSC its 10-4 advantage.
After 131 pitches, Moore finally exited after eight innings. But Utah Valley reliever Ryan Chadwick retired the Utes in order in the ninth to preserve the victory.
Hennis had all four RBIs for Utah, but was just 1-for-4 at the plate. Designated hitter Bret Baldwin and catcher Jesse Shriner were both 3-for-4 and Shimada was 2-for-4. The Utes rapped out 11 hits in the contest, but couldn't produce enough runs. Krause (0-1) suffered the loss for Utah. Moore (4-2) picked up his third straight victory for Utah Valley State. He struck out five and walked two in eight innings of work.
Utah (16-20) goes back to Mountain West Conference play later this week. The Utes host New Mexico in a three-game set, beginning Thursday night at Franklin Covey Field.
