SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team suffered a tough loss on Saturday against No. 69 New Mexico, who took the match 5-2.
The Utes put up a good fight in doubles play, but were only able to seal the deal at the top spot. Elizabeth Ferris and Leigh Walsh faced Sandra Zmak and Lucy Scott from the Lobos for an 8-6 victory in the Utes' favor.
Although the Utes didn't end on a successful note in the other two doubles positions, credit goes out to their intense efforts. Emily Kwok and Cheyenne Reveche faced Ola Abou-Zekry and Jennifer Ryba at the No. 2 slot for a 9-7 loss. Karine Bourdages and Andrea Maughan played out the same story at the No. 3 slot. Nora Quintal and Maria Sotirchos defeated the Ute duo 9-7.
Diving into singles play, Walsh finished up first for Utah. The Ute had a tough day on the courts with only winning one game. Mackenzie White defeated Walsh 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 3 slot. Kwok battled Sandra Zmak at the No. 2 slot for the Utes. Zmak dominated in the first set to take it 6-0. The Ute tried to come back in the second set, but couldn't hold the Lobo back. Zmak took the match 6-0, 6-4.
Bourdages finished up next at the No. 6 slot. The Ute stepped in to face Maria Sotirchos from the Lobos. Bourdages slammed a 6-3, 6-4 match win over the Lobo to put the Utes on the board. Reveche had a tough day on the courts playing at the No. 5 slot. Lucy Scott from the Lobos swept the first set 6-0, but Reveche put up a fight in the second set in an attempt to overcome Scott. The Lobo was challenged by Reveche, but in the end, Scott pulled ahead to take the win 6-0, 7-5.
The last two on the courts were both in three-set battles. Maughan was battling Nora Quintal at the No. 4 slot. The Ute took the first set 6-2, but Quintal stepped up her game in the second set. The Lobo took the second set 6-2 and continued her winning momentum into the tie-breaker to overpower the Ute. Quintal took the set and match 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Competition truly got heated up at the top spot on Saturday between Ferris and No. 119 Ola Abou-Zekry from New Mexico. The Ute took the first set 6-4 over the Lobo to get things started. In the second set, Abou-Zekry came back last minute, but in enough time to take the set at 7-6(6). In the tie-breaker, another referee was asked to step in to aid in calling the match due to conflicting opinions between the players. The two went point for point, but Ferris stepped up her game and set up her shots to overcome the Lobo 6-4, 6-7(6), 10-8. The Ute is now 18-0 in dual match play. The University of Utah women's tennis team is now 3-3 in conference play.
