SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah men's basketball team had its best academic semester in five years this spring. The Utes recorded a 2.97 cumulative grade point average, which is their best since the 2002 spring semester. Three players made the Dean's List and five were placed on the honor roll.
Kim Tillie, Luka Drca and Johnnie Bryant made the spring semester Dean's List. Lawrence Borha and Curtis Eatmon joined them on the honor roll. Misha Radojevic just missed making the honor roll.
"The direction of the program was in limbo for several weeks with the coaching change. Due at least partially to that, several players were underachieving academically when I came on board and we had some issues to deal with," said Ute head coach Jim Boylen. "We knew that we needed to get things moving in the right direction immediately, and over the past seven weeks there's been an increased sense of urgency with the players in regard to their academics and overall accountability. The guys who bought into how we want to build this program really rallied to close out the spring semester. We felt like this was a good start in building the foundation of our program."
"We haven't played a game yet, but myself, the coaching staff and the players have made a passionate effort to improve the things we can control right now: academics, conditioning and weight training," Boylen continued. "We feel the players must be held accountable for those things. Since coming on board March 26, we feel like we have started making a strong push in the right direction."
"Since Jim has been here academics have been a point of emphasis not only for the players but everyone involved with the team," said JoAnn Hulbert-Eagan, the U.'s director of academic advising for athletics. "Jim has asked everyone to step it up in that area and he has been on top it from the beginning. As an academic advisor, it's good to know that you have the support of the head coach to help hold student-athletes accountable. He has brought a lot of energy to everything he does, and that has certainly been good for the academic advising department."
