SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team fell to the Oklahoma State Cowboys, 81-69, inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center Saturday afternoon.Â
Â
Utah (9-12, 1-7 Big 12) overcame an early 6-2 deficit with an 8-0 scoring run, capped by a bucket from
Terrence Brown at 15:55, to make it 10-6.Â
Â
A few plays later, senior guard
Don McHenry converted a 4-point play at 14:42 that put the Utes ahead 14-7 and closed out an 11-1 Utah scoring run.
Â
Facing an early deficit, Oklahoma State (15-6, 3-5 Big 12) responded with an 11-0 run of its own to take a 20-16 edge midway through the period. The Cowboys managed to maintain their advantage until the 7:53 mark when Utah jumped out in front with a
Terrence Brown fastbreak dunk to make it 24-22.Â
Â
Shortly after Brown's score, Oklahoma State reclaimed its lead while Utah remained within striking distance and entered the break down 40-39.Â
Â
Brown and McHenry led the way for Utah in the first period, accounting for a combined 25 points with 12 and 13, respectively.Â
Â
Utah opened the second half with a renewed sense of energy, firing off a 9-4 run to earn a 48-44 edge with 15:11 left to go. The lead change would be one of 10 in the game, as the two teams exchanged strikes throughout the majority of the contest.
Â
Minutes later, ahead 52-49 following a free throw from
James Okonkwo, the Utes saw their advantage dismantled as Oklahoma State fired off an 8-0 run to make it 57-52 with 8:43 remaining.
From there,
Seydou Traore responded with a three-pointer to get Utah within one possession (57-55) of the Cowboys; however, that would be the closest the Utes came to retaking a lead. The Cowboys maintained their poise for the rest of the way and defeated the Utes, 81-69.
Â
Brown led Utah with 20 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds and a steal. The junior guard was one of four Utah players to finish the game in double figures with McHenry (17),
