SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team came up short against the Arizona State Sun Devils, falling 73-60 inside Desert Financial Arena Saturday afternoon.Â
Â
Early in the contest, Utah (10-19, 2-14 Big 12) put together a 7-2 advantage over the Sun Devils behind strong offense from the duo of
Terrence Brown and
Keanu Dawes.Â
Â
As the period progressed, Dawes continued to go to work on the offensive end—opening a 7-0 scoring run for Utah with a high-flying slam dunk at the 15:51 mark—a run that continued until a steal-and-score from forward
Seydou Traore forced an Arizona State (15-14, 6-10 Big 12) timeout and made it 14-5 in favor of the Utes with 15:03 to go.Â
Â
The Sun Devils came out of the timeout with a renewed sense of energy, unleashing a 13-5 run over the next five minutes of action to flip the script and take a 19-18 lead with 9:40 left in the stanza.Â
Â
From there, Arizona State continued to push the pace, taking a 34-24 advantage over the Runnin' Utes into the halftime break.Â
Â
Down 43-30 with 16:19 left in the game, Utah's offense started to click as the team fired off a 9-0 run capped by a transition three from
Don McHenry at 13:33. The McHenry triple, assisted by
Lucas Langarita in his first game back from injury, brought Utah within 43-39 and forced another ASU timeout.Â
Â
Minutes later, after ASU pushed its lead to 57-44 with 9:34 to go, Utah responded with another scoring spurt—a 7-0 run thanks largely in part to Dawes, who net five points, including a three-pointer that made it 57-51 with 7:54 to play.Â
Â
Despite the effort from Dawes and the Utes, Arizona State maintained its poise down the stretch, preserving its lead until the final buzzer and earning a 73-60 home victory over Utah.Â
Â
Dawes led Utah with a team-high 16 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. McHenry joined his teammate Dawes in double-digit territory with 14 points of his own.Â
Â
BY THE NUMBERS
- Utah outrebounded the Sun Devils by a margin of 35-31
- This included nearly doubling ASU's OREB figure, 13-7
- Utah also outmatched ASU in fast break points, 14-9Â
