Utes take week off to prepare for Western Invite

THIS WEEK:
The team is off to rest and train for the upcoming Western State Invitational Jan. 19-20 in Crested Butte, Colo. It will be the Utes' second-consecutive trip to the Centennial State, as the Nordic team competed in the CU Invitational Jan. 19-20. The Utes enter their off week in sole possession of first place in the RMISA standings.
Utah last competed in the WSU Invitational in 2006, finishing fourth. Then-freshman Scott Veenis turned in a sixth-place GS finish, while Mikaela Grassl (also a freshman in 2006), posted a season-best seventh-place finish in the women's slalom.
LAST WEEK:
The Utes wrapped up the Colorado Invitational Sunday, surging to a second-place finish with 522 points in Snow Mountain Ranch. Host Colorado was the overall winner with 549 points. The alpine portion of the invitational was held Jan. 5-6 in Steamboat Springs, and the Ute downhillers raced to fourth place in the standings.
Snorri Einarsson led the men's contingent, finishing first in the 15K Classic. Teammate Even Sletten was a close second, finishing seconds behind his fellow Norweigan. Casey Simons earned points for the Utes as well, posting a 12th-place finish. On the women's side, Kjersti Boe placed seventh in the 5K Freestyle to lead the Utes. The 10K Classic was the best event of the weekend for the Utes, with Sara Schweiger placing fifth, Annelies Cook taking sixth, and Zoe Roy finishing eighth. Utah finished first in the Nordic team standings with 280 points. Colorado was second with 271. The Utah alpine team was fourth with 242 points.
ELECTRIC EVA:
Newcomer Eva Huckova is taking the RMISA by storm. The Slovakian freshman has already notched three top-10 finishes. She was especially impressive at the Utah Invitational, only her second collegiate event, where she finished third in slalom and first in GS. Huckova hails from the city of Banska Bystricka and represented her country at the 2006 Torino Olympics, finishing 27th in the giant slalom.
SNORRI, SNORRI, HALLELUJAH:
Sophomore Snorri Einarsson turned in his second victory of 2008 at the Colorado Invitational in Winter Park.The Tromso, Norway native's victory in the 15K Classic was the fourth of his collegiate career. Einarsson won the 15K Freestyle at the 2008 Utah Invitational, and in 2007 Einarsson won the 15K Classic at the Denver Invitational and the 20K Classic at the NCAA Championships.

"It was exciting to see Even and Snorri in the lead pack. On the last hill when they made their move and took the lead, it was really exciting. It's awesome for Snorri to win again and also awesome to see Even fighting for the top. Ben Fick and Ian raced hard, but dropped back later in the race, that is when senior Casey Simons started moving up. He knew the team needed him and dug deep. It was great to see. I have to say, a big part of our success today is due to our coaches, Wendy and Kristina, who nailed the wax. Everyone had really good skis."
