SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah ski team opens its season at the University of Colorado Invitational, with the alpine racers competing Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 5-6, at Steamboat Springs, Colo.
All nine NCAA western region programs (Alaska-Anchorage, Colorado, Denver, Montana State, Nevada, New Mexico, Western State and Whitman) will participate in the event, which kicks off with the women's giant slalom on the Seeme Trail on Mount Werner at Steamboat at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the men following. Sunday's slalom will take place at 4 p.m., starting with the men.
The event is held over a two-weekend span, with the nordic skiers competing at Snow Mountain Ranch the weekend of Jan. 19-20.
Scott Veenis, 2006 giant slalom national champion and Tague Thorson, 2007 Australia-New Zealand Cup champion are the top returners for the men's alpine team. The women are paced by All-Americans Chirine Njeim and Mikaela Grassl.
