THIS WEEK
Coming off a big meet against University of Denver last week, the Utes are preparing for a meet against the UNLV Rebels in Las Vegas Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. PDT.
The Utah women's team built its season-opening win streak to six last week against Denver, while the Utah men's team is looking for its first win of the season in its first meet against a Mountain West Conference opponent.
LAST WEEK
The women won 12 of 16 events last Saturday against Denver in Salt Lake City. Whitney Lopus continued her great season with four first-place finishes: the 400 medley (3:51.10), the 200 fly (2:05.07), the 500 free (5:02.78), and the 400 free relay (3:27.34). Hannah Caron and Annie VanLeeuwen took the first two spots in the 200 free with times of 1:51.67 and 1:52.94, respectively. In the 100 breast, Maiya Otsuka and Chelsea Peterson tied for second with a time of 1:07.51. Otsuka also finished first in the 200 breast (2:21.22) and helped the 400 medley relay to a first-place finish. The divers continued to dominate on the boards, with Anna Braskiewicz finishing first in the 1-meter dive and 3-meter dive and Queenie Yu in second in both.
The men posted an impressive effort against nationally-ranked Denver, eventually falling 175-123. Vlas Lezin and Major Robinson kept the meet close with Lezin taking second (53.38) and Robinson finishing fourth (54.43) in the 100 back. John Baque also added to the score in a big way by winning the 100 breast (57.90) and the 200 breast (2:06.55) with Michael DeCarolis finishing third in the 100 breast (58.74). Simon Oberholzer and Eric Bonicelli took the top two spots in the 200 fly, with times of 1:55.70 and 1:55.97, respectively.
"This was a huge step forward for the men today. We need to learn to get our hand on the wall before other guys, and that will come with practice and maturity," said Head Coach Greg Winslow. "If we continue to progress the way we are, we'll be right where we want to be by the end of the season."
UTE NOTES
The women finished in third place behind UNLV in 2008 at the Mountain West Conference Championships and have eight returners from that team, including Natalie Edge and Jen Fredsall, each winning events in last year's regular season meet against the Rebels. In the last meeting on Nov. 10, 2007, both men and women lost at home. The men last won against UNLV in the 2003-2004 season at home. George Evans returns as the lone first-place finisher for the Utes at last year's meet, winning in the 100 free.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
The UNLV men look to defend their Mountain West Conference Championship this season. Returning for the Rebels are Thomas Andolffson and Calan Eldridge. Andolffson helped his relays teams finish first in the 200 medley, and the 200 free relays at last year's MWC Championships, while Eldridge was on the winning 800 free relay team. The Rebels competed against BYU last weekend at the UC Irvine Invitational, defeating the Cougars 91-41 and 67-46.
The Rebel women are coming into the meet aginst Utah fresh off a loss to Colorado State. The women finished second in the 2008 MWC Championships and have a strong returner in Andrea Weinbrecht, who finished first in the 200 back and helped the 200 and 400 medley relays win at the MWC Championships. UNLV's women's team also competed against BYU last weekend, losing 83-39 and 85-28.
