SALT LAKE CITY -
Morgan Scalley, a second-team All-American and the 2004 Mountain West Conference co-Defensive Player of the Year, has been hired as the new safeties coach at his alma mater. He will also assist with the Ute special teams.
Scalley replaces Derrick Odum, who left to coach the secondary at SMU. Scalley has spent the last two years as a graduate assistant at Utah - serving as an administrative assistant in 2006 and coaching the strong side linebackers last fall.
"We are pleased to announce the addition of Morgan Scalley to our coaching staff," said Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham. "As a coach, Morgan brings the same energy and passion to our program that he did when he was a team captain and an All-America defensive back for us. Morgan did a great job this past season in his role as a graduate assistant coach, and after conducting a national search, it became apparent that he was the right fit for our staff."
Said Scalley, "I have always been a `Utah Man' and I'm grateful that Coach Whittingham has given me the opportunity to coach at the school I love. In addition to coaching, I think I can sell this program as well as anyone, because I truly believe in what the U. has to offer. I can't wait for the season to start."
One of the best safeties in school history, Scalley lettered from 2001-04, earning all-conference honors as both a defensive back and a punt returner. He served as a team captain during his senior year, when Utah went 12-0 and became the first non-BCS conference team to play in a BCS bowl game. Scalley was honored as a unanimous first-team all-conference selection, the MWC co-Defensive Player of the Year and a second-team All-American by the Associated Press and SportsIllustrated.com in 2004.
He made the all-conference second team as a defensive back in 2003, and was an honorable mention all-MWC punt returner from 2001-02. He returned kickoffs, as well, including one for 90 yards and a touchdown in 2004.
Scalley also starred in the classroom. A first-team Academic All-American in 2003 and 2004, Scalley was the 2004 Anson Mount and Mountain West Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year. He was awarded two post-graduate scholarships, including an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship. Scalley served as president of Utah's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as a junior and senior.
After his Ute career, Scalley was presented with the inaugural Pat Tillman award in the 2005 East-West Shrine Game, recognizing him for his character, intelligence, sportsmanship, and service.
Scalley earned his bachelor's degree in mass communication in 2004--graduating magna cum lade with a 3.96 cumulative grade point average. In 2006, he completed his master's degree in business administration.
The 28-year-old Salt Lake City native and his wife Liz (Herrscher) have a daughter Madeline.
