LOGAN, Utah - The University of Utah track and field team competed at the Mark Faldmo Invitational on Saturday. The meet hosted by Utah State saw windy conditions, however, those conditions didn't stop Ashley Patterson from setting a new school record in the 200m dash. Patterson won her heat in the process of setting the new record and finished with a time of 24.47.
Patterson was not the only Ute to win an event. Alyssa Abbott won the 800m with a time of 2:13.23. Chelsea Shappard won the 400m hurdles in a time of 1:00.23. Her time was fourth on the all-time Utah list. Teammate Chelsey Kaplar placed third in the 400m hurdles with a season best 1:03.77. Sarah McFee added a victory in the triple jump with a distance of 35'8''.
Liza Whitehead placed fourth in her heat as she ran the 100m in 12.22, which is the third-best all-time in school history. Chastity Toilolo placed second in the shot put with a distance of 42'10.25'', which is eighth on the all-time list.
Josefin Berg fell one-inch short of winning the hammer throw. She placed second with a throw of 199'04'', the second-best on the all-time list. In the same event Sarah Grimm threw a distance of 170'05'' which beat her previous personal best by over 14 feet. Grimm placed fourth in the event.
"I'm very happy with how hard we competed today," comments head coach Kyle Kepler. "The weather conditions were difficult today with the wind, but our athletes fought hard and really stepped up. We took a step forward today and I'm proud of our team. Now we have to prepare for next week where we will be at two meets that will test us against some of the best in the nation."
