OGDEN, Utah - UNLV scored three runs late in the game to rally for the 4-3 win over the University of Utah baseball team here this afternoon. Today was the second of three games here at Lindquist Field in Ogden, Utah. The Utes and Rebels wrap up the three-game series here tomorrow at 1 p.m.
The Utes (15-21, 4-9 Mountain West) took a 2-1 lead into the eighth inning. But, UNLV took advantage of a costly error in the eighth to plate two runs, passing the Utes. Jesse Wight's two-RBI single in the eighth vaulted the Rebels into the lead. While Utah capitalized on a UNLV error in the bottom of the eighth to tie it, 3-3, the Rebels scored the game-winning run in the ninth to edge the home team.
"We didn't get it done late in the ball game," said head coach Bill Kinneberg. "We made some mistakes, and we wasted a good pitching performance from Brian Budrow tonight."
The Rebels held the 8-7 edge in hits, but five of UNLV's hits came in the last three innings. Budrow got the start on the mound for Utah but reliever Robert Chimpky takes the loss in relief, falling to 0-4. Budrow went 7.1 innings, and he allowed only seven hits and three runs. He fanned seven UNLV batters, and he didn't issue a single walk.
Jesse Shriner led Utah with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate, but Austin Jones accounted for both of Utah's RBI's in going 2-for-3 tonight.
Both teams exchanged runs in the first inning. UNLV plated the first run on Braden Walker's sac fly, while Utah countered on Jones' sac fly.
However, Utah took the 2-1 lead on Jones' RBI double to right field in the sixth. The shot down the right field line scored Shriner from second.
The Rebels countered in the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out, Wight hit a two-RBI single to help UNLV take the 3-2 lead. Utah managed to pounce on a UNLV error to tie it. Also in the eighth inning, with Cooper Blanc on second, Michael Beltran hit a bounding ball to the shortstop. He threw it away, allowing Blanc to score from second.
But, UNLV took control in the ninth. With one out and a runner on second, Drew Beuerlein hit a ball up the middle to score the game-winning run.
Adam Moser got the win in relief for UNLV. J.J. Sferra and Wight both led the visitors with a pair of hits while Wight had two RBI.
