FORT WORTH, Texas - A tremendous pitching effort from John James kept the University of Utah baseball team alive here in the consolation bracket of the Mountain West Conference Tournament this morning. The Utes blanked San Diego State, 1-0.
It was a win-or-go-home game for both Utah and SDSU. Each of them came into the game with one loss in the double-elimination tournament. The Aztecs go home, Utah faces UNLV at 3 p.m.
John James went toe-to-toe with one of the top collegiate pitchers in the nation, Stephen Strasburg, and John James came out on top. He struck out nine SDSU batters and only allowed four hits. SDSU couldn't tally a run on James, drawing just four walks off of the starting pitcher who threw the first complete game of his college career.
The game's only run was in the third inning, and it was hung on Utah's side of the scoreboard. Corey Shimada was hit by a pitch with one out, and a Cody Guymon single followed. SDSU got the second out of the inning, but a two-out Dustin Hennis single scored Shimada from second. That was all Utah needed for the victory.
A red-hot pitching prospect, Strasburg loses to his first Mountain West Conference team of the season. He went seven innings, allowing five hits and one run. He walked three batters. In all Utah had seven hits. Jesse Shriner was best on the team with a 2-for-4 effort.
