Annie VanLeeuwen is a junior from West Valley City, Utah. She went to Cyprus High School before coming to the U. VanLeeuwen has been a regular on the relay teams this year, helping them break school and Mountain West Conference records in the 400 and 800 free relays. She has also excelled individually, recently finishing first in the 100 breaststroke against a Colorado State team, first in the 200 free at TCU and first in the 1000 free and the 100 breaststroke against SMU.
Below is a 10 question interview with VanLeeuwen:
What are you majoring in? I'm majoring in Family and Consumer Studies
What drew you to Utah? Well, I'm from Utah so I was choosing between the school down south and Utah. When I came on my recruiting trip here it was really fun. I liked the school a lot and liked the girls a lot. Plus, I've always been a Ute fan.
What do you do in the offseason for fun? I like to go backpacking and camping here in Utah. I've been to the Uintas Mountains a lot. There are some lakes, Blue Lake and Four Leaf Basin, that I really like to go to.
What is your favorite movie? While You Were Sleeping with Sandra Bullock. It's a major chick flick.
What kind of music do you like to listen to? I listen to a lot of country music. I like Brad Paisley and Josh Turner. I also listen to some other stuff like James Taylor. I love James Taylor.
What is your favorite event as a swimmer? I like swimming the 100 breast. I don't get to do it very often but I like it when I get to do it.
Have there been any athletes that have really inspired you? Back in the day, I loved Marion Jones. I think it was because she did really well in the [2000 Olympics in Sydney].
What has been your favorite moment as a swimmer here at Utah? I think any moment where I get a best time is great. Those are some moments where you don't feel like you're really in it. It's hard to explain, but after it happens and you get that best time it feels like everything, all the hard work, early morning workouts and weightlifting, was worth it.
What are your plans for the future? I want to be a high school counselor and I want to coach, but I really don't know where yet. I've lived in Utah my whole life, and I'll probably stay here.
Any last, cool tidbit of information that lets people know a little more about you? When I was in elementary school, I was on the jump rope team. I could cross it and double-jump and everything. The jump rope team was the popular group, so I was a cool kid back then.
