THIS WEEK
The Utes head down to Texas to take on Mountain West Conference rival TCU on Friday. This is the second conference matchup for the Utah men this season and the women's third. On Saturday, the will Utes continue their Texas road trip to Denton, Texas. There the men will face the SMU Mustangs and the women will take on the women from North Texas.
LAST MONTH
The Utah Swimming and Diving teams finished up 2008 in a big way. At the Princeton Big Al Invitational last month, not only did the women finish second and the men in third place in the team standings but they also set plenty of new school and MWC records.
Whitney Lopus (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led the way with four individual MWC records in the 200 free (1:46.28), the 500 free (4:42.47), the 100 fly (53.19), and the 200 fly (1:56.78) events. She was also part of record-breaking relay teams in the 400 free (3:18.71) and 800 free (7:13.62) relays. Also on those teams were Natalie Edge (South Jordan, Utah), Annie VanLeeuwen (West Valley City, Utah), and Hannah Caron (Raleigh, N.C.).
Caron was another individual record breaker. Her time in the 200 IM (2:00.55) beat the former MWC record by just over half a second. Maiya Otsuka (Littleton, Colo.) added to the women's weekend luster by breaking the University of Utah record in the 200 breast event (2:17.36).
The men also saw some record-breaking action. Adam Oliver (Colorado Springs, Colo.) set new records in the 1000 (9:15.24) and 1650 free events (15:17.70). The former records stood for over a decade.
In addition to record-breaking times, the Utes received individual honors for their performances. Lopus' times earned her third MWC Swimmer of the Week award for the season and Oliver received his first MWC Swimmer of the Week award for his times. Edge was also honored at the Big Al Invitational as the Most Inspirational Athlete.
UTE NOTES
The Utah women are 3-0 against TCU since their inclusion into the MWC in 2005. The men are 1-2. Last year, the men were narrowly defeated by the Horned Frogs 136-101. The women soundly beat TCU 141-95. "We want to see the men pull out a win this weekend." said Head Coach Greg Winslow. A win for the men on Friday would be the first that Winslow has seen since coming to Utah in 2007.
The Utes are heading into the matchup with TCU fresh off from their winter training at the La Loma Altitude Training facility in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. "We've trained them into the ground over the break here in Mexico, and we'll see if they bounce back strong," said Head Coach Greg Winslow. "This weekend will definitely test their endurance, what with coming off the break with TCU on Friday and then the women taking on North Texas and the men swimming against SMU."
This weekend's meet against SMU and North Texas will be the first time that the teams will have met in head-to-head competition.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
The TCU women started out the first half of their season with a 4-2 record, losing to BYU and Wyoming. Freshman Ashley Bolin and Katie Rosen are having standout years so far, posting top times against both Wyoming and BYU. With Bolin and Rosen leading the way, the Horned Frogs look to be competitive in both the short distance free and breast events.
The men ended the first half of their season with a 1-4 record, getting their lone win against UT-Permian Basin. The Horned Frogs have two all-around swimmers in Josh Bagby and Edgar Peyro. Bagby and Peyro had top finishes against BYU. Bagby finished in first place against Wyoming in the 50 free. Both TCU's men and women will be competing in Las Vegas against the UNLV on Tuesday before competing against Utah.
The SMU men and women finished fourth, respectively, at the Art Adamson Invitational on Nov. 24. The women fell behind teams from UC Berkeley, Texas A&M and Michigan. The men finished behind Stanford, LSU and Purdue. Both teams will compete against Georgia on Tuesday before competing against Utah at North Texas.
North Texas was ranked #10 in the CSCAA/CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major poll until finishing five of six at the FAU Invitational on Jan. 3rd.
