LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Utah swimming and diving team wrapped up competition at the Toshiba Classis on Saturday, with both teams finishing in the top 10. The Utah men finished fifth out of 14 teams with 428.5 points and the Utah women were ninth of 25 with 271 points overall.
"Really happy with how we did this weekend," said head coach Greg Winslow. "The men came from behind, trailing BYU and others by almost 30 points and then leading them on the last day by 30. It has been fun to watch the team follow the leadership, get excited and do well."
The Utah men had qualifiers for each event on the final day of competition. Freshman Bryan Michaels (Shoreline, Wash.) continued to have a good meet, finishing 10th in the 1650 free in 15:33.12. The time was a personal record for Michaels. Senior David Pursley also qualified for the finals in the 1650 free, finishing 16th with his time of 16:04.76.
In the 200 back, sophomore Major Robinson (Missoula, Mont.) was eighth overall with his time of 1:52.51 and freshman Austin Fiascone (Hinsdale, Ill.) finished 21st in 1:59.09. Five Utes qualified for the final heat in the 200 breast. Senior John Baque (Olympia, Wash.) finished in sixth place, the highest finish for a Utah swimmer on the weekend, with a time of 2:03.92. The Utes also had three men in the 200 fly finals, with sophomore Eric Bonicelli (Overland Park, Kan.) finishing 10th with his time of 1:52.20, sophomore Luke Donohue (Portland, Ore.) finishing 19th in 1:55.66 and Will Leonhart finishing 31st in 1:59.08.

Caron and Edge also were on the ninth place 400 free relay team. The team, also including junior Kristina Evans (Salt Lake City, Utah) and senior Annie VanLeeuewen (West Valley City, Utah) finished in a time of 3:29.01.
Freshman Kayla Buck (Folsom, Calif.) finished 23rd in the 1650 free with a time of 17:35.13. Behind her was senior Kristina Helmers (Pennington, N.J.) in 29th place in 17:45.74.

Junior Maiya Otsuka also had a top finish for the Utes by placing 18th in the 200 breast with a time of 2:20.72.
"There was a lot of freshman that stepped up and scored points for us," said Winslow. "Austin Fiascone scored points in two events and did a fantastic job this weekend. Bryan Michaels continued to set new season best times in his events and also got a new personal record. Kayla Buck also had new season best times in her events."
The Utah swimming and diving team has the winter break off as they prepare for the second half of their season.
"We haven't even started power and speed phases of our program, and that's what we'll turn to in the next six weeks," said Winslow. "We'll start to add some power and speed to our athletes. They are looking forward to it, because this is what they want to do."
The Utes will be back in the pool on January 9 when they host Mountain West Conference rival TCU at Ute Natatorium.
