Utah Women's Swimming and Diving Defeats TCU
Ute women beat Horned Frogs, 157 - 141.
SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's swimming and diving team beat TCU Wednesday night, 157 - 141, at the Ute Natatorium. The Utah men fell to TCU by four points, 151 - 147.
"Tonight's meet was gut-wrenching," said Utah Head Coach Greg Winslow. "It was a fantastic meet. TCU did a great job. It was back and forth all night on both sides."
The Utah women finished first in 10 of 16 events. The Utes were led by junior Natalie Edge (South Jordan, Utah), who finished first in the 50 (23.86), 100 (51.85) and 200 (1:52.95) free. Edge also assisted the 400 free relay team to secure a first-place finish (3:28.86).
The winning 400 free relay team also included freshman Chardonnay Biter-Mundt (Napa, Calif.), junior Kristina Evans (Salt Lake City, Utah) and senior Annie VanLeeuwen (West Valley City, Utah).
"Our women's team proved a lot [tonight]," said Winslow. "They came back and have had a lot of close meets this year. They had to fight through [tonight's meet] after a hard Christmas training session and to get the win tonight is a big deal. We tied this team last year and to win it this year means a lot."
The Utes also received support from sophomore Hannah Caron (Raleigh, N.C.) who placed first in the 100 (56.76) and 200 (2:05.50) fly, the 200 IM (2:06.21) and also helped the 200 medley relay team finish first (1:49.95). Also on the 200 medley relay team were senior Beth Gunderson (Portland, Ore.) and juniors Maiya Otsuka (Littleton, Colo.) and Kristina Evans (Salt Lake City, Utah).
The Utah men took first-place in six of 16 events and were led by senior David Pursley (Edmonton, Canada). Pursley finished first in the 500 (4:44.71) and 1000 (9:47.31) free and took second in the 200 fly (1:55.49).
"This is the toughest our men have swum since I have been here," said Winslow. "I am really proud of them for standing up and going out after their races. For the meet to come down to the last relay is hard, but we'll get there and I think that we are exactly where we want to be at this point in the season."
Sophomore Eric Bonicelli (Overland Park, Kan.) placed first in the 200 fly (1:53.35). Freshman Bjorn Gunnarson (Norrkoping, Sweden) took first in the 100 free (46.76) and freshman Karson Applin (Houston, Texas) placed first in the 100 fly (50.64). Nelson Foo secured a first-place title in the 3-meter dive with a score of 343.20.
The Utah women swimming and diving team will host San Diego State on Saturday, Jan. 15 at Ute Natatorium. The meet begins at 1 p.m.
