SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah ski team hits the final stretch of their season with the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Championship, Feb. 19-21, hosted by the University of Nevada.
The meet doubles as the NCAA Western Regional with alpine events slated for Mt. Rose in Reno, Nev., Feb. 19-20 and Nordic events taking place at the Auburn Ski Club in Trucklee, Calif., on Feb. 20-21.
Utah is in position to have at full team of 12 available for the NCAA Championships. Some are looking to earn a better starting spot while others are fighting to qualify. The Utes have some events where they will have to make choices about who will ski, since only six women and six men (three per gender per discipline) can enter.
"It should be a good weekend for us," Director of Skiing Eli Brown said. "Everyone is healthy and we are looking forward to our last big meet. There are several people racing each other for our final spots. We will let the team score fall where it may and we'll work on our final preparations for NCAA's.
"They have gotten about eight feet of snow in the last few days out there, so the alpine races will be a little sketchy, but I am looking forward to seeing some good performances."
On the alpine side, Nick Cohee leads all Utah skiers with a first-place standing in the giant slalom. He has three wins and a fourth-place finish on the year in the event. Thomas Zumbrunn (7th GS, 16th SL), Scott Veenis (9th GS, 14th SL) and Hermann Lager (9th SL, 14th GS) are also in the mix for the men's alpine team.
For the women, Utah is the only team to have four athletes in the top 10 of the giant slalom standings. Eva Huckova leads the Utes in both slalom and giant slalom, standing fifth in both. Mikaela Grassl (6th GS, 15th SL), Chirine Njeim (7th GS, 24th SL) and Chelsea Laswell (9th GS, 22nd SL) are the next four women with NCAA potential for Utah.
The Nordic teams are also heavily contested, especially the women's team, where Annelies Cook in eighth and Zoe Roy in 11th are both in a solid position for the Utes. Sara Schweiger stands 14th. Parker Tyler in 18th and Devon Spika in 20th are fighting to qualify for one of 16 slots available.
The Nordic men have a bit of a challenge ahead. Didrik Smith (9th) and Even Sletten (12th) are Utah's top points getters. Sletten has come on strong as the season has wound down, winning the classical race at Denver two weeks ago. Ben Fick stands 23rd of a possible 20 qualifiers, but he will benefit from several schools having numerous skiers in the top 20.
The meet begins with the men and women's slalom on Thursday, Feb. 19, while both teams are in action on Friday with the men's and women's giant slalom races and the Nordic 10-km and 5-km classic races. The meet concludes on Saturday with the freestyle 15-km and 10-km Nordic races.
