SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah ski team has its first full meet weekend at the Montana State Invitational, held Jan. 15-17 in Big Sky and Bozeman, Mont. MSU will also be hosting a Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association qualifying giant slalom race on Friday.
Utah is currently third after the alpine portion of the Utah Invitational, held Jan. 11-12 at Park City Mountain Resort. Eva Huckova earned a win in the giant slalom for the women while Torjus Krogdahl was second in the slalom on the men's side. Nick Cohee, Thomas Zumbrunn and Kyle King all finished seventh-eighth-ninth in the men's giant slalom, and Sofia Smith had a strong finish in the women's slalom with a 12th-place run.
Alpine action begins at the MSU Invite with the GS qualifier on Friday, the meet GS on Saturday and closing with the slalom on Sunday.
Friday's 10- and 15-km classic races mark the first action of the season for the Nordic team. Saturday is the 5- and 10-km freestyle races. The women are led by two-time NCAA qualifiers Zoe Roy and Sarah MacCarthy. Devon Spika and Parker Tyler were both NCAA alternates for the Utes last season. Rose Kemp and Madeleine Talkington both redshirted last year and return this season while Mali Noyes is a transfer from Middlebury College. Newcomers are Marta Larsen from Sweden and Karina Smith from Norway.
On the men's side, Ben Fick is a two-time NCAA qualifier. Didrick Smith was an NCAA qualifier as a freshman and was not out of the top 20 all season while Rolf Figi served as an NCAA alternate last year. Team captain Ian Havlick had five top-25 finishes last year while Tom Smith was in the top-25 in all 10 races he competed in. They are joined by Martin Liljemark from Sweeden.
The team left early Thursday morning and Director of Skiing Eli Brown gave the following report from Bozeman:
"We're here in Bozeman and fired up. We have a quick turnaround from the last meet. We are excited about the results from last weekend to start the season. This is our first normal race weekend and the Nordic team is really excited to start the season off. We feel like we are well prepared and we are anxious to get going. I'm glad it's finally here. We are excited about how many points we got last weekend and how we fared. We made a lot of mistakes, and to still be third is solid. We hope we can crack away and take small steps up the ladder and move towards our real goal of the 12th championship. With every race weekend we look to refine and learn and move ahead.
"This weekend we will see where we fall with the Nordic team and then regroup and get ready for the second half of the home meet. It's nice to take a road trip together - this is a wonderful group and we are getting to know each other and looking forward to getting it started."
