SALT LAKE CITY - Eva Huckova and Max Lamb each earned podium finishes in the giant slalom as the Montana State Invitational continued on Saturday, while Miles Havlick led the Nordic skiers with a fifth-place finish during the freestyle races.
Huckova finished third in the women's giant slalom in 1:47.4 for her second podium finish of the year. Sofia Smith was 10th in the race in 1:49.3 while Anna Kocken was Utah's third scorer in 16th (1:49.8).
Lamb earned his first collegiate podium finish in just his fourth race, finishing the men's GS in 1:44.4. Kyle Kung also had a top-10 finish with a sixth-place run (1:45.2). Nick Cohee (15th, 1:45.7) and Ryan Wilson (16th, 1:45.8) also had strong finishes.
"It was a good day for our alpine team, a big improvement from yesterday," Director of Skiing Eli Brown said. "Max and Sofia both skied awesome, and Eva and Kyle continue to have solid finishes."
Havlick, a freshman competing in just his second collegiate race, finished the 10-km free in 25:29.50. Rolf Figi placed 10th in 25:57.37 and another freshman, Martin Liljemark, placed 11th with a time of 25:58.67.
The women's Nordic team was led by Zoe Roy's eighth-place finish in the 5-km freestyle with a time of 14:32.56. Rose Kemp placed 18th in 15:04.46.
Several Utes on the Nordic side are still battling illness and several skiers did not start.
"I am really psyched about Miles finishing fifth," Brown said. "That was also a good finish for Martin in his first race at high altitude. We have a very talented team. It's good to see when some racers are down others rise to the occasion step up their finishes. Our goal now is to continue to improve and learn. Once we are all at our best we will be dangerous!"
Utah stands fourth at the invitational with the men's and women's slalom races remaining tomorrow. The Utes have 539 points, trailing Colorado (691), New Mexico (631), and Denver (611).
